Soccer Sunday: Your Running Commentary

A new season in England unofficially kicks off today as defending Premier League champions Manchester City face off against FA Cup winners Chelsea in the FA Community Shield.

After building a reptuation as big spenders in recent years, Manchester City have yet to sign a new player in this year's transfer window and enter the Community Shield with essentially the same roster that captured the Premier League title back in May. Chelsea, meanwhile, have signed the likes of Eden Hazard, Marko Marin, and Oscar while seeing big names like Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou leave the club.

In Germany, two heavyweights and contenders for this year's Bundesliga crown will meet in the German Super Cup, as Bayern Munich host rivals Borussia Dortmund.

The Superclasico between the Los Angeles Galaxy and Chivas USA headlines Sunday's MLS action, but a pair of Eastern Conference matchups will also see the New England Revolution face the Montreal Impact, and the Philadelphia Union take on the Chicago Fire.

  1. Maybe Klinsman saw Landon’s commercial for the Mexican lotto and is deciding to sneak the whole team across the border because “ganar en Mexico es facil”

  2. It’s almost like US Soccer doesn’t even want us to think about this. No mention on their website of even when it will be announced. A game in Azteca is usually a pretty big deal.

Maybe Klinsi is testing out a new secrecy policy to see how it works for when we get to qualifying.

I’m trying to figure out the up-side for the team of waiting this long with the announcement.

  3. Thanks for posting. Really nice goal; took some bull-strength to hold off the defenders and then gently curl it into the far corner. Power and finesse all at once.

  4. And comes out in the second half with 2 slick goals (and almost a great assist right after) ! Nicely done! That’s a bit more like last year’s Josmer!

  5. Jozeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow! And wow! Those were two frickin’ good goals. Jozy was a bull on the first one and was not going to be denied and the second was a lovely piece of work and well placed shot in the roof of the net, sort of like Donovan’s in WC2010 against Slovenia. USMNT is getting stronger by the minute in the striker position.

  6. Of course Jozy would go score two goals in a row after what I said about his touch.
Man if only he could play even average the rest of the time he’d be at a major club.

  7. Yikes Jozy looks not good What in the world has he been doing in the offseason? Definitely doesn’t appear to have been working on the touch.

  8. Chelsea put up a valiant fight being down a man most of the game. Would have liked to see it stay 11 v. 11. Could’ve been a really great game.

  9. Jozy decided to wear the ol’ lead boots today unfortunately. Hasn’t been able to control the ball when is comes his way. Hopefully they soften a bit throughout the match.

  10. Yes, just an opinion. The Galaxy v Chivas matchup is as superclasico as Salt Lake is Real. The latter we have no control over. As you were.

  11. Shea? really? so he has had a descent year last season…. do you think any team will spend money on what he is doing this year?

  12. Deuce has certainly been linked with Liverpool. Not sure how active or advanced Liverpool’s interest is? As a Red Dragon supporter would love to see him at Anfield. Not sure about other possible destinations.

Ives – any real progress or news on Deuce’s club situation?
