Americans Abroad: A Look Ahead

Clint Dempsey made a habit of coming up big in marquee matches during his time with Fulham, and Tottenham Hotspur are surely hoping that will also hold true, beginning with this weekend.

Spurs are set to pay a visit to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United in a game that might mark Dempsey's toughest challenge in the early goings of his Tottenham career. Dempsey has started in the club's last few matches and he surely is hoping to get the nod again so as to try and open his goal-scoring account for a Spurs side that is currently on a four-game unbeaten run.

Another player who may be involved in one of the weekend's high-profile games is Michael Bradley. The midfielder just returned to training after recovering from a thigh injury and he could make his second league appearance of the season in AS Roma's visit to Juventus on Saturday. Bradley is unlikely to start in the battle of Italian heavyweights, but he could take part as Roma attempts to upset first-place Juventus in Torino by coming off the bench.

Aron Johannsson is likely set for another start for AGF Aarhus when they take on Odense BK on Sunday, and the red-hot striker will be aiming to add to the 10 goals that currently have him as the top scorer in the Danish Superliga. Johannsson and Aarhus are currently in fourth place in the league and a win could bring them within striking distance of second-place Aalborg BK.

  1. So, what’s the subject of the USMNT Daily Update today? Fringe Players and Potential Call-Ups, German-American Influence on the Team, The Landon Donovan Effect?

  2. Yep, you’re right. Tottenham against a 14-man Man U team. It was discouraging to see Liverpool outplaying Man U last week only to get the questionable red card late in the first half and then continue to outplay Man U in the second half only to see Man U gifted penalty kick. And then it all made sense after I saw a news article yesterday speculating that this might be Sir Alex’s last season before finally retiring. I imagine he is going to go out a winner.

  3. Geez. Calm down, Chris H. It was more of a question than an assertion. There is a major difference in Dempsey’s situation and MB’s. Dempsey was not not injured and had been training full-time while Bradley has now been out more than a month recovering from injury and has not even on the bench in all that time. I am not saying Klinsmann won’t call him up, but with MB not dressing this weekend and only one more chance to play a club game before Antigua, I will be surprised if Klinsmann calls him up.

  4. i think the whole 3 man official group will be wearing Manchester red under their referee uniforms as always.

Will dempsey play this weekend? he has done 70+ mins twice this week. If it wasn’t for a ton of injuries for spurs id bank on him playing off the bench.

  5. No Davies/Goodson match up since Davies may not play and Goodson definitely will not play since the captain is serving a red card suspension.

  6. We keep hearing mid-October and Holden posts pics on his feeds of his workouts. Unfortunately he has never officially said when he’ll be back (at least not recently).

  7. You slay me biff… it will rule him out for the USMNT just like Deuce’s transfer saga ruled him out for the September WCQ…ruled him out and right into two starts for the team

  8. With the first of the two upcoming World Cup qualifiers only two weeks from today, I guess that pretty much rules out Bradley for the USMNT roster, doesn’t it?

  9. pretty sure he’s said he’d have to consider it if he got the call from the USA. I think if Jurgen shows serious interest and faith in him he’d play for us but we’ll see.
