Clint Dempsey did not have to wait very long to make his Tottenham Hotspur debut and he repaid the faith head coach Andre Villas-Boas showed in him by putting in a solid shift in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday.

Four days after making his Tottenham debut by coming off the bench against Reading, Dempsey started and played 74 minutes in the Spurs’ scoreless draw with Lazio. Dempsey played centrally and looked a good fit with his new teammates, even scoring a goal that was questionably called back for offside in a match that gave Tottenham a point in their Europa League opener.

Dempsey was not the only American involved in midweek action. More than a dozen players saw time for their respective clubs, including Sacha Kljestan and Jonathan Bornstein. Kljestan went the distance in Anderlecht’s UEFA Champions League tie with AC Milan while Bornstein ended his long spell on the sidelines by starting and playing 55 minutes in Tigres UANL’s 1-1 draw with Real Esteli in the CONCACAF Champions League on Tuesday.

What did you think of Dempsey’s first start for the Spurs? Impressed with Kljestan and Anderlecht’s draw against AC Milan? Do you see Bornstein stringing together some appearances now?

  1. LOL. Lots of hate for Specs on this board but his managers and I suspect JK respect his work ethic and versatility. His last two games in midfield have been very strong – so strong that despite the fact that although the top two choices for right back have injuries, they haven’t moved Specs back to that position which is what always happened last year. Good for him.

  2. Spector is massively underated. One of the few good things I can say about Klinsmann as the US MNT coach is that at least he continues to give him call-ups, but that’s probably only due to his German heritage.

  3. Specs was honored at the beginning of the match as the Birmingham player of the month for August. Not bad for a guy who hadn’t played in 6 months and missed preseason.

  4. He’s targeting October/November return. They’re trying to be very cautious with his knee is what I’m reading from the Bolton articles.

  5. Ream seems to be currently trapped in the muck and the mire at Bolton. Anyone know more than that he is not making the bench on a Championship side?

  6. Well, see, he has this one weird trick. And it’s a secret! But you can have it for the right price. All other language professors are too damn broke to afford to learn it, so they’re jealous. See?

  7. Love this in the minute-by-minute from the Guardian: “Bale cut in from the right and then clipped a dainty cross to the far side, whereupon Dempsey dived to head splendidly into the net! But it’s chalked off for offside, a hair on Dempsey’s left knee having strayed into forbidden territory.”

  8. The real questions is why would language professors “Hate” him? He seems like a guy that language professors would love to study to understand his techniques…
