The English Premier League did not disappoint this weekend as Arsenal and Manchester City settled for a 1-1 draw and Manchester United defeated Liverpool, the result decided with less than 10 minutes remaining in both matches.

City was under the impression that Joleon Lescott’s 40th minute header was enough to down the Gunners, but Laurent Koscielny beat Joe Hart in the 82nd minute to salvage a point. The result helped both sides avoid their first loss of the campaign.

The biggest upset of the weekend came in Germany, where tittle holder Borussia Dortmund fell to celler-dwelling Hamburg. Heung-Min Son netted what would be the winning goal in the 59th minute, his second of the match. Ivan Perisic tried to bring the away side back with a goal a minute later, but the comeback fell short.

In Spain, Barcelona got a scare from lowly Granada, but held on for a hard-fought three points. The home side needed an 87th-minute strike from Xavi to put them ahead, and Lionel Messi forced an own-goal by Borja Gomez to seal the win.

Here are the rest of the results from Europe's top leagues this weekend:

  1. Yes, Man U is often the beneficiary of 50-50 calls, but that is all they were and that’s the nature of soccer. If you want to be sure of the win you have to beat your opponent and the ref.

  2. Let’s be clear about one thing–Man U did not win. The referees won. Again. For the umpteenth time in recent memory Man U was the sole beneficiary of bogus officiating.

No team in sports (NBA doesn’t count since they’ve actually been caught rigging games and are about as legitimate as the WWE) is the beneficiary of incorrect officiating more than Manchester United.

Not even teams caught in the match fixing scandals benefit to the extent that United do. Why even watch a game as an opposing fan? If the referees don’t gift them a penalty, they will be denying your team the same penalties or sending off players like a Pez dispenser on automatic.

Season after season it’s a dozen games where United are handed the win. How are you supposed to compete with a team that’s going to get 20-30 points they don’t deserve every year?
