Even after the additions of Christian Tiffert and Mario Martinez, the Seattle Sounders might not be done adding to their attack just yet.
According to the Seattle Times, Sounders general manager Adrian Hanauer said that former Chelsea and Barcelona attacker Eidur Gudjohnsen will be with the club on trial this week ahead of the Sept. 15 MLS roster freeze deadline. As a free agent, he is able to sign with the club this season even though the league's transfer deadline has come and gone.
Gudjohnsen, an Iceland international who will turn 34 later this month, has had a journeyman career following his more notable stops at Chelsea, where he won two Premier League titles, and Barcelona, where he was part of the 2008-09 UEFA Champions League winning team along with Thierry Henry. He last played for AEK Athens last season following a 2010-11 season split between Fulham and Stoke City and spent time at Tottenham and Monaco prior to that.
What do you think of this development? What do you think this would mean for the Sounders' attack? Do you think his potential acquisition could change the Sounders' outlook?

Where did i say GD?
Theyve allowed the second least goals. Thats what defense is. Not allowing goals.
Slight adducter strain according to the team. Decided to rest him last week rather than subject him to the rigors of heat and travel to Trinidad and Tobago and Frisco.
My guess is that the team is setting itself up for a run in the playoffs and didn’t want to take a chance on aggravating a minor injury going into the home stretch.
Gudjohnsen would help to shore up the team’s depth at forward and give them even more tournament experience. Seattle still has some cap room and this would be a nice way to use it.
When I see mid 30s has-beens playing professional footie in the US I get this odd feeling of deja vu. (And for those under 40, it didn’t work out too well the first time around.)
It appears SSFC insults you more
Dude is washed up. He didn’t do cr*p for Barca when he was there.
Seattle needs to get grass if they are to be taken seriously. They lay out the grass for the Euro teams, but not for their own??? Inferiority complex ?
They are really insulting their fans if they think the fans don’t know it better. They made a lot of money from the gate so it’s not an excuse from a financial standpoint.
Would the Sounders hold some discovery on him. Perhaps it didn’t work out and he signed with CHICAGO?
try and win against Seattle sometime
Now that sounds racist…
That was the second half of the 2010-2011 season. He played in Greece last year.
Drogba? Have you noticed what has been happening in China lately?
Oh please 35 year old guy from Iceland LOL! what the f*cking management is doing?
If goal differential in MLS is your measure of a team’s defense you need to go back to FIFA 12 and stop talking on blogs. How has Seattle fared against Mexican clubs in CCL? I remember a 7-3 loss on agg. to Santos earlier this year.
Hasn’t the post-Montero era been expected for about 4 years now?
You’re right about one thing, Seattle isn’t Chicago.
We have an SSS.
Plus, Icelandic population? That’s news to me…..
send me up some of that weed Vic
That’s Portland
Seattle ain’t Chicago.. We don’t act like we care about the the guys who invented to dogs
Only his first season was good?
You need less grass, my friend.
No way. he’s been way past it for 3years. why would he sign here for less than a quatter million a year
Only his first season was good……. Sounders don’t need him, a real good soccer player does not does not sit on the bench. Sounders need a new coach, sigi is not bad but his tactics and soccer coach personality along with his coach skills are not for Seattle Sounders. Their fans deserve something like ronaldinho or becks style, but they need grass and maybe their own wembley.
I watched him play the second half of last year with Fulham. He still had it then.
Really Montero doesn’t take MLS seriously. You his confidant. Pretty sure Montero has always set his sights with goals to specifically win the MLS trophy and the golden boot. If he didn’t take MLS seriously then he would have asked to return to Colombia.
Win win situation. Looks like LA is about to bolster their attacking options with Wilhelmsson.
Gudjohnsen will help further boost attacking options. He can play as a CAM or a second striker, and he is a very good locker room guy as well. Nothing wrong with signing him up to a 2 year contract. Seattle wants to make deep runs in both the CCL and MLS cup competitions. If he is signed then Gudjohnsen will further help Montero and Johnson stay healthy, and better match fit because there will be a rotation to a certain degree. El Tanque a.k.a. Ochoa is not a guy you want leading the line if Johnson and Montero go down with injuries for an extended period of time.
Look at owen, he could of gone to an MLS team like Seattle. Who are seattles dps, montero and who else……. Their goalie, rosales, tiffert. montero doesn’t take seriously mls, and i truly believe Seattle could be a hotbed for dps like a drogba style or even beckham style but they need grass…….n maybe their own wembley due to their soccer history. So who will get grass first in the northwest , i think Vancouver will get their own stadium and with grass.
He’ll be needed in the post-Montero era.
Because Seattle has to cater to its white supremacist viking fan base unforunately
By the way, Eidur Gudjohnsen literally means Edward Good Johnson. So in all its hilarity, there would two Eddie Johnson’s in Seattle.
One good and one bad 🙂
Seattle already has 3 DPs. If they can fit him under the salary cap, and he can contribute, then I don’t see why this would be a bad move.
I can not believe it, so why not ballack, drogba, raul, and all those other over 30. Also, i can not believe everybody its talking positive about this move. Then why not anelka and players at his AGE and LEVEL…….. Seattle deserves better ,especially their fans. Grass and real Dps
And he would a huge marketing opportunity to all of Seattle’s 32 Icelandic Ex-pats
Lol. Impossible.
Wow, quality player. It would be interesting to see what physical shape he is in at 34, and whether he’s lost a step.
2nd lowest GA argues against your point
Eider helps, but Seattle needs a stronger defense if they want to compete with elite teams of MLS and CCL.
Their offense is already superb, but there is no rock in the back to intimidate opposing attackers.
Is EJ hurt?
i cant really say i support chelsea but i LOVED that team and eidur was a big reason for that
jimmy floyd + crespo too
the only way seattle would sign him is if they think he can contribute… can’t see sigi signing a player to simply sit the bench and not contribute.
+1
If he doesn’t have the ability, he doesn’t need to be signed.
We shouldn’t be in the business of signing players to simply help mentor young players. We already have a role for that as a paid employee…
…they’re called managers.
i second this. he never complained when he was on the bench, he just game in and did his job. quite well at that. he scored and set up quite a few.
Good one.
He’s holding a cup! and the Sounders want to win the MLS cup and make a run at the CCL !!!!
I have immense respect for Eidur from his time with Chelsea. His partnership with JF Hasselbank was immense quality. He was an important piece to the first two titles under Mourinho. He appeared to be a great teammate and worked really hard on the field.
He could provide a veteran prescence and act as a mentor for the younger players, much like Blaise Nkufo.
I’m sure he’s going to like that artificial turf and the wonders it’ll have on his 34 y.o. knees.
Plus Seattle has direct flights to Rejavik
There’s really no downside to this.
Even if he doesn’t produce on the field, his experience and mentorship will be priceless for the young players.
Better than Victor Palsson?
I think he has the potential to be the greatest Icelandic player ever in the MLS.
I can see him coming off the bench toward the end of the game. I don’t see him playing a full 90 in the MLS.
Anytime you can bring in a player of that pedigree it will help your club. No matter whether he still has the ability he once had or not, his experience can help other players grow.
