Red Bulls vs. Sporting Kansas City: Match Night Commentary

New York Red Bulls Logo Sporting Kansas City Logo

First place in the Eastern Conference is on the line tonight as the New York Red Bulls play host to first-place Sporting Kansas City at Red Bull Arena (7pm, MSG).

The Red Bulls are in third place, two points behind Sporting KC and enter with a five-match home winning streak. They haven't lost at home all season and enter with some momentum after a 3-1 victory against Columbus last Saturday.

Sporting KC enters the match with the best road record in the league, and have won four of their past five road games. Their defense has been especially stingy, having posted three straight road shutouts.

Another shutout won't be easy tonight against a Thierry Henry-led Red Bulls attack. Henry and Tim Cahill will have the task of spear-heading an offense that will give Sporting KC their toughest test in a while.

  1. Springsteen – sold out concert at the Meadowlands
Yankees – double header with Petit back in the line up
7:00 Start time – rush hour traffic all over the area

Those are some pretty big obstacles for RB fans. I went, left my home over an hour prior to the game. Ride normally takes about 1/2 hour on the weekend. Got into my seats just after opening kick. Met a guy at the beer stand who said NJ TPK was at a standstill.

Gotta have 7:30 starts on weekdays.

  2. Great stadium and experience, but they don’t make it easy to get to the game from NYC. Last time went to the Tottenham-Red Bull game it was a nightmare using the small Path station. Also know that driving and parking many have bad experiences. Location for midweek is not easy for many to get to as well no?

  3. Yeah its pretty embarrassing seeing the crowd, midweek game isnt a good enough excuse for this show up, im sick plus i work the night shift so i couldnt attend this game but what do people with normal shifts have to say about not wanting to go to this game? Yanks? The Boss? so sad

  4. Not that seeing jerseys signifies fanhood necessarily. I just figure that if kids out here are wearing them, there’s gotta be a LOT more out there.

  5. I constantly wonder why NYRB has such low attendance. New park, exciting team full of stars, will compete for MLS cup. It’s baffling to me, especially when I’ve seen multiple NYRB jerseys in Phoenix and in Springville, Utah.

  6. I’m confused. Why is RB Arena like, 10% full? I know it’s Wednseday night, but this is a potential game of the year. Even for mid-week friendlies, LSP is packed. This is just weird.
