The 2012 season for both Real Salt Lake and Chivas USA could have been summed up with Saturday's game. Despite a strong showing from Chivas keeper Dan Kennedy, it was not enough to keep the opposing team out of the net, and often. Real Salt Lake's Álvaro Saborío knocked it past Kennedy three times on his own, tallying his second hat trick on the year to lead RSL past Chivas 4-0.

The win, Real Salt Lake's third in their last four matches, puts them in sole possession of second place in the Western Conference. They now sit three points clear of both Seattle and LA Galaxy, who face Colorado on Sunday.

Saborío did not take long to make an impact on the game, as the Costa Rican forward already had two goals just eleven minutes into the match. He would then add a third to complete his hat trick in the second half.

Meanwhile, the Goats continue to struggle to find the net at all, as they were shut out for the fourth consecutive match. Their last goal was in a 2-1 loss to Seattle on September 8th. Miller Bolaños had several opportunities, but was denied by Nick Rimando on each chance.

They will look to end their franchise record six-game losing streak on Wednesday, as they travel to BC Place to take on the Vancouver Whitecaps. Meanwhile, Real Salt Lake will return to the Home Depot Center to take on the Galaxy on Saturday.

Here are the match highlights:

  1. I hope this is a sign that RSL is peaking at the perfect time. However, beating the Goats doesn’t prove anything. The next three games against LA, Seattle and Vancouver will prove it all. Go RSL.
