SBI MLS Player of the Week: Eddie Johnson

In an abbreviated week for MLS, one of the most in-form players on one of the league's most in-form teams stood tallest.

Eddie Johnson's two-goal performance to lift the Seattle Sounders to a come-from-behind, 2-1 victory over Chivas USA made him the easy pick for SBI MLS Player of the Week. Johnson's two scores not only delivered three more points to a team now within six points of the Supporters' Shield with seven games remaining, but he also set a single-season club record for goals with 13, breaking the mark set by teammate Fredy Montero.

Johnson, who has emerged as a top aerial threat in his return to MLS this season, headed home a Christian Tiffert free kick in the 28th minute to bring the Sounders level before netting the game-winner with another header off a pinpoint cross from Montero in the 89th minute.

Johnson outdueled Colorado rookie Tony Cascio and defender Drew Moor, New England forward Dimitry Imbongo and Houston Dynamo goalkeeper Tally Hall for the weekly honors.

What did you think of Johnson's performance? How high do you think the Sounders will rise in the standings by season's end? Which MLS player do you think had the best week?

  1. If he could finish better with his feet he’d be an awesome national team forward. He’s very strong in the air, and, as it stands now, he’s the only one in the potential forward pool who can really run at people. He has improved a lot since he was 23 (?) and headed for Europe. Would it kill some of you guys to acknowledge that, and give him a little credit for getting better at his craft?

  2. as most of us have learned the hard way, you can be great in MLS, it doesn’t always translate to the national team. for those of you who have been watching the USMNT for more than 4 years, you remember the consistent disappointment that was EJ. i am very happy that he has resurrected his career, seriously, it’s awesome, and he is playing really well, but i can’t bear to watch him play with the big boys anymore. please god no.
