SBI MLS Rookie of the Week: Tony Cascio

With the Colorado Rapids turning to an alternate forward partnership with Conor Casey nursing an injury and Omar Cummings away on international duty, rookie Tony Cascio stepped up to help deliver a convincing victory with one of his best performances in his first season MLS.

Cascio starred in Colorado's 3-0 win over the Portland Timbers Friday with a goal and an assist to take home SBI MLS Rookie of the Week honors. Cascio set up Andre Akpan's opening goal and then added one of his own, sticking with a rebound of his own saved shot to give the Rapids a 2-0 edge. His contribution was vital helping the Rapids out of the Western Conference cellar with three points that has them still technically alive and fighting for the fifth playoff spot out West.

In a light week across the board for MLS rookies, Cascio was the top dog, outshining the likes of Chivas USA forward Casey Townsend and New England Revolution midfielder Kelyn Rowe.

What did you think of Cascio's showing? Where do you think his season ranks among the top rookies this season?

  1. This was a rebuilding year for the team, but they have the talent to play much better.

Casey/Cummings was the best 1-2 punch in the league for years and this year they have been awful. Their makeshift defending does not cut it with the improved teams in MLS.

Rivero/Thomas is a good partnership to rebuild around for Colorado.
