After another strong month, Sporting Kansas City sit atop the MLS Eastern Conference standings and are just three points off the pace for the Supporters' Shield. That's not all that the club was able to accomplish in August, though.

A 3-0-1 record in MLS play coupled with the second U.S. Open Cup title in franchise history made Sporting Kansas City the pick for SBI Team of the Month. Sporting KC ended the Seattle Sounders' three-year reign in the tournament to clinch a place in next season's CONCACAF Champions League and capture the club's first trophy since the 2004 Open Cup.

Three days later the club put on a dominant performance in a win over D.C. United and finished things off for August with a road win in Toronto and a draw against the New York Red Bulls. The club, which lost striker Teal Bunbury for the season to a torn ACL in the New York match, will have its mettle tested in the coming weeks, with six straight games against teams either currently in Eastern Conference playoff positions or in the mix for a playoff berth. Four of those matches will come away from home, including two at New York.

Sporting Kansas City beat out a tough field of contenders that included the Montreal Impact (4-0 in August), Columbus Crew (3-1-2, unbeaten in their last five), and Seattle Sounders (5-1-1 in all competitions) for this month's honors.

What did you think of Sporting KC's month? Do you see Sporting KC winning the Eastern Conference despite its upcoming schedule? Which MLS team do you think had the best month?

  1. I assume you meant “refs” as in the team of refs which officiated that game.

You’re right – they DID do a pretty good job, didn’t they? Tough game for them to call but they actually get the big decisions right.

  2. SKC’s TotM recognition is well deserved. In addition to the USOC hardware, August wins kept them at the top of the EC table and in the hunt for the Supporters’ Shield.
