Soccer Sunday: Your Running Commentary

After two weeks Arsenal are yet to record a win or even score a goal in Premier League play this season, but they will look to change that today as they face Liverpool.

A re-tooled Liverpool side loaned away striker Adam Carroll before the transfer deadline, while picking up Turkish midfielder Nuri Sahin. Now, the Reds take on an Arsenal team that is desperate to earn all three points after drawing its first two games.

Elsewhere in Europe, a big slate of games in La Liga is headlined by a matchup between Barcelona and Valencia. In Italy, Inter Milan hosts Roma in an important early-season meeting.

Later tonight, the MLS playoff race continues as the Chicago Fire host the Houston Dynamo in a nationally televised matchup. Other games include the Seattle Sounders' trip to face FC Dallas and the game between the San Jose Earthquakes and Chivas USA.

Burned by Obertan and Ben Arfa. Got one yellow, and got away with just checking Obertan, instead of making at least a pretense of playing the ball. They let you get away with that these days, but they shouldn’t.

wasn’t very impressed by eric. He played an OK game. Benefitted from Simpsons injury and the repositioning Newcastle did. Was lucky not to be called for a number of fouls just in and outside the box on both sides of the half.

I think an under-performing big club (probably in a slightly off-brand league, but better than A.1) could do some remodeling and buy him in January. Just too much scoring at such a tender age to ignore.

Interesting how much the opinions on Lichaj are differing today. Wish I’d recorded that one!

It might be in Eric’s best interests to NOT get called up.

US fans did not seem to notice but one of the first things his new manager did is buy a fullback, Lowton.

It seems clear Lambert is not as in love with Lichaj as US fans are. Going through all the Villa websites and the like, it seems the consensus is Lichaj is great but not yet ready to be a fulltime EPL starter. And Lambert’s behavior seems to confirm that he may well agree.

My guess is JK has been leaving Lichaj out so he can concentrate on winning a spot. He just started this weekend so it may not be the best time to disrupt that.

  • GW

For what it is worth the Guardian gave Lichaj a 6.4, which was the second lowest ranking for a Villa player ( Holman got a 6.1).
