This time, there was no convincing Jose Torres to step aside.

Just three days after Herculez Gomez persuaded Torres to let him take the free kick that wound up being the winner in the U.S. men's national team's victory over Jamaica, Torres netted what wound up being the decisive goal in Pachuca's 3-2 win over Morelia on Friday. Torres curled in a ball from the right flank that sailed over everyone in the penalty area before nestling in the far corner.

The goal was Torres' first of the season and gave Pachuca their second win of the Mexican Apertura campaign. It was also the U.S. midfielder's first in league play since the 2010 Clausura season.

Here's the goal (at the 1:09 mark):

What do you think of Torres' goal? Do you see this win helping Pachuca string together some positive results?

  1. I don’t think that was a shot. It was a cross meant for a header at the far post that went too close to goal. I think that a keeper, a good one, typically has that covered.

  2. That is a thing of beauty. I am a fan of Jose Torres and am convinced at the current time he deserves at least a spot on the game-day bench or possibly as a starter. In either case, he is great on free-kicks and with Gomez we now have two masters he can score from free-kicks and we saw last week against Jamaica how valuable that can be. And I have a feeling that after Klinsmann’s statements last week trying to fire up Torres we are going to see further improvement in coming months.

Who is this Ricardo Bocanegra that a few people are starting to talk up and what is his status? I see that he has played 8x for the Mexico U-23 team.

  3. Pretty sick!

Still dont like him on the national team. Hoping to see Ricardo Bocanegra of Altas get called into a friendly. He’s better than torres.

  4. Torres is a good kind of player for the USMNT. Klinsmann’s insistent search to include his talents into the team’s fabric has overall strengthened it, my opinion. Now it’s about finding that fabric’s best expression, the best weave 🙂

Paco’s definitely in there whatever his ultimate role I think. And sorry for the broken record next, but doesn’t Benny splitting time with El Gringo makes much sense!?

    nice goal too 🙂
