Americans Abroad: A Look Ahead

As far as Americans Abroad match-ups go, this weekend could provide one of the best of the season.

As many as four Americans could be on the field at the same time on Sunday, as Tottenham takes on Aston Villa. Spurs goalkeeper Brad Friedel and Villans netminder Brad Guzan are likely to square off in a battle of former mentor and apprentice, while Clint Dempsey might have to beat the likes of Eric Lichaj in order to score in a second consecutive league game for fifth-place Tottenham.

Geoff Cameron and Maurice Edu may also be involved in one of the more interesting match-ups of the weekend. Stoke City will visit Anfield to face Liverpool for the first time this season and Cameron is a sure bet to start for the Potters, though at what position is anyone's guess. Edu will be looking to make his Stoke debut after failing to find the field in September.

While that duo will aim to help Stoke earn a victory, another player will be targetting his return from injury on Sunday. Michael Bradley is recovered from the thigh strain that forced him out of action last month and is hoping to play in AS Roma's match with Atalanta. Should Bradley play, the match would mark his second league appearance this season.

  1. Friday German update – Gyau, John Anthony Brooks, did not make the roster for their clubs. Alfredo Morales was an unused sup in Hertha’s 3:0 win over 1860 Munich.

  2. Is that it? He’s gone forever without missing an EPL game. I thought it was like 10-years every game a starter, never missed a match.

  3. Mix was out with a hip injury in the Europa League match on Thursday, don’t know if he’ll be playing this weekend, my guess is that he won’t.

  4. it’s Americans Abroad, not USMNT players abroad. He could be taken off, after all Guiseppe Rossi isn’t on here, but I don’t think it’s so bad that we include non-USMNT American players on this list.

  5. ?

If he gets capped in the next couple of weeks, it’s going to be in Euro WCQ. What exactly is the point of representing your national team if not to play in big games?

If he wants to play for Iceland–or even if he’s not sure that the US is going to work out–it would be silly not to accept the call up. They are currently in a great situation to get out of their group.

  6. Is Aron Johannsson gonna be removed now ???

He’s an idiot to not at least try the US in a training camp. The kid is 21 and it wouldnt be the end of the world if he declined the Iceland call up.

  7. Friedel has like 311 or 312 consecutive PL games. All of those starts. It’s amazing. Arguably the 2nd best PL goal keeper ever.

I’d only rate Schmeichel over him. Cech, Reina, Van der Sar all come close but he nudges them. IMO

  8. Bornstein should be taken off the list. I doubt he has played more then 200 minutes in the three years he’s been playing down south.

  9. You think it’s about time to remove Eugene Starikov from this list? He’s on here every week and every week he doesn’t play. It should read: Eugene Starikov will watch FK Rostov play Terek Grozny… from the bench.
