Americans Abroad: A Look Ahead

If seeing the U.S. Men’s National Team players lock up a berth into the next round of World Cup qualifying was not enough to satisfy your soccer cravings, you’re in luck, because there are plenty of appetizing matches involving Americans to watch this weekend.

Two of the biggest games will take place over in England, with Clint Dempsey and fifth-place Tottenham hosting league leaders Chelsea while Geoff Cameron, Maurice Edu and Stoke City pay a visit to Old Trafford to battle Manchester United. Just how many minutes each of the three Americans will receive after having played in the U.S. win over Guatemala on Tuesday remains to be seen, but they all should be able to at least partake in some capacity.

Terrence Boyd is also set for one of the weekend’s most intriguing fixtures, as he and Rapid Vienna travel to take on Austria Vienna in their second tilt of the season. Boyd and the rest of the Green-Whites dropped the first Vienna derby at home, so they will be aiming for some payback on Sunday.

Wondering what other match is worth following? Look no further than Helsingborgs IF’s home game against Orebro SK on Sunday. The match will mark Alejandro Bedoya’s first clash against his former club, and he will want to deliver a good outing for them to remember him by.

    • The defending by Hoffenheim, especially down the stretch, was nothing short of atrocious. GF had TWO goals all term and they put three in the net at Rhein-Neckar? Hoffenheim just took the easist three points of the season and flushed two of them. Shame.

  1. Hoffenheim are out to a quick lead against Greuther Fürth. Fabian Johnson is in the starting 11; Danny Williams not in the 18.

  2. Conor Doyles appendix burst while training with Derby County in Miami, so count him out for at least a month. He can’t even travel back to England yet after his surgery.

  3. Has anyone seen John Anthony Brooks play? He’s a young GermAmerican CB who plays in Bundesliga 2. I’m wondering if those games are ever covered by TV…

    • Dude you must be a noob!

You can find the games online, he played today

He’s featured in 4 US – U-20 camps and 1 german U-20 camp and backed out of the last US call-up to be an alternate for Germany.

Most people want to see him called into the November friendly vs Russia

      • Did he back out of the recent tournament in Spain (saw a SBI article about it a couple weeks ago)? If so, that’s really disappointing.

Isn’t the U-20 German NT kind of a joke, anyway? Once you get past U-18 or maybe U-19, you’re supposed to have made the jump already.

    • What does “smh” mean? Does there have to be an acronym abbreviation for everything? You know what, never mind. I’m just going to assume it means “so many honkeys” or “shaved muskrat heirloom.” “Sensible midsized hamburgers.”

  4. I know there are a bunch of Americans playing abroad that are not listed here for whatever reason. But its great to see this list growing bigger and bigger. Shows how the game is expanding here

    • why call him up? Iceland called him up a week ago but “some injury came up”. Besides let’s see if his scoring can continue into next year before we seriously make him an offer he can’t refuse.

      • What are you talking about? I’m pretty sure it was a “fake injury” so he wouldnt get cap-ited without at least trying the US before he makes an international decision.

Of course Iceland was gonna call him up but Im sure klinsmann told the kid that he’s young and doesnt have to make a decision now. First try the US, then make the choice!

  5. Looking forward to and hoping i can catch the game on internet of Conor O’Brien with Sonderjyske.
He should get a look one day by USMNT. It is about time and he is ready and tested. Many, many consistent minutes and he is multi-dimensional. Watched him for years and he always finds a way to deliver and his teams seem to achieve improved results after his introduction. He is a results oriented and unselfish team player who deserves a shot, or several, at the higher level.
