Americans Abroad: A Look Ahead

Everton has enjoyed a dream first couple of months in the Premiership campaign, overcoming the typical slow starts that have haunted them in years past. They currently sit in fourth place in the league standings, and are within striking distance of second after having lost just once in their first eight games of the year.

Things could get that much sweeter this weekend.

Everton hosts Liverpool at Goodison Park on Sunday in the first Merseyside derby of the season, and the Toffees will be aiming to compound on their rivals’ misery by handing them their fourth loss of the season. While Liverpool is currently down in 12th place, Tim Howard is likely to be a key figure in the high profile tilt as he will need to prevent the dangerous duo of Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard, among others, from finding the back of the net in what is sure to be an open affair.

One match that will not draw nearly as much publicity but is still worth watching is the battle between Rosenborg BK and Molde FK. Both teams are currently atop the Eliteserien standings with 52 points apiece and with only four games remaining in the campaign, Sunday’s result looks to prove vital to each team’s respective title hopes. Mix Diskerud should be in the lineup for Rosenborg, while Josh Gatt is out for Molde due to yellow card accumulation.

Club Tijuana will also attempt to jump into first place, but the Xolos will need to defeat Morelia in order to give themselves a chance of doing so. Joe Corona should see time in the match in some capacity for Tijuana, while teammates Greg Garza and Edgar Castillo’s statuses are a little less certain.

Which of these games are you most looking forward to? Think Howard and Everton will see off Liverpool in the first Merseyside Derby of the season? Bummed that you won’t get to see Diskerud vs. Gatt in a game with so much on the line?

  1. I head that Aron Johannsson picked Iceland, but he didn’t play in either of their World Cup Qualifiers this month. Is there a chance that he will change his mind? I can’t find any recent news about it.

  2. There should be a movie about Clint Dempsey.

maybe say Jake Gyllenhaal as him? Or some other late 20’s, early thirty something actor? Joseph Gordon Levitt? Shia labouef? James Franco? Ryan Gosling?

  3. If Jermaine Jones and Timothy Chandler are on the field at the same time, then there will be potential for some highly entertaining duels between the two. I think both will have something to prove. Schalke is flying high after wins over Dortmund and Arsenal, while Nurnberg in the past five games has lost four and tied one, not helped by poor performances from Chandler, who for some inexplicable reason seems to be falling apart this season.

      • Do you really think he looks at SBI? In any case, I am wondering whether there might not be a connection between his shattered Germany national team aspirations and his poor form. I think that in August he truly felt he would get a phone call from Jogi Low either in September or October. But it didn’t happen and his club coach has said publicly that his confidence has plummeted and that his poor form is all in his head. Could be that Chandler is suffering deep regret for screwing up a sure thing with the USMNT to win a ticket to Brazil in 2014 and it is messing with his head. Maybe ol’ Timmy is even contemplating crawling back on hands and knees to apologize to Klinsmann, his former US teammates, and the fans and then beg for mercy so he can play in WC 2014. Heh-heh.

But, of course, before that could happen, Timmy needs to improve at the club level. Dolo and Parkhurst are both playing much, much better now than Chandler at the club level. I bet some MLS guys who have dreamed since childhood of playing in the US shirt and who would sweat blood to win a starting spot on the team would outplay Chandler at the current time. We really don’t need Chandler anymore and it is probably driving him crazy and he’s kicking himself for being so stupid and slapping his forehead with the palm of his hand. Poor guy. Heh-heh.

      • Yes, but let’s remember:

Chandler’s ceiling is exponentially higher than Parkhurst’s, for example. Chandler in a slump still garners significant NT attention, while Parkhurst has to play out of his mind just to be a serviceable fill-in option.
