One of the two remaining teams with perfect records went down yesterday, as Marquette fell to Georgetown for their first loss on the year.
The Hoyas, No. 7 in the SBI Top 25, controlled the pace from the start, and proved to be too strong for their Big East rivals, rolling to a 2-1 victory.
A Steve Neumann free kick in the second half proved to be the difference, as Georgetown improves its record 12-2-1 on the year, with both losses occurring in conference play earlier this month. The No. 4-ranked Golden Eagles will look to rebound from their first loss as they return home to take on Pittsburgh on Wednesday, which has lost its last six matches.
In another matchup top Big East teams, Louisville took care of business against 15th ranked St. John’s, posting a 1-0 victory. Will Vitalis continued his strong form in conference play, scoring the game’s only goal early in the first half.
From there, keeper Mike Mauro and company had to hold off a Red Storm offense that was hellbent on returning the favor. That never occurred, despite holding the shot advantage on the home squad.
Late in the second half, St. John’s attacked on a last-ditch effort to preserve a point, with Mauro making his second save on the night to keep the Cardinals in front.
Two top five teams were in action on Saturday, with both cruising to easy victories, as number two ranked North Carolina dominated College of Charleston to the tune of a 3-0 victory. Meanwhile, number three ranked Akron had no troubles with Northern Illinois, defeating the Huskies 2-0.
