Any questions about whether the Maryland Terrapins are deserving of their ranking as the No. 1 college team in the nation were put to rest on Friday as they edged No. 2-ranked North Carolina in a rain-soaked ACC showdown.

Schillo Tshuma re-directed a Patrick Mullins shot into the net in overtime to help give the SBI No. 1 Terps post a 1-0 victory against the No. 2 Tar Heels at Ludwig Field in Maryland.

The Terrapins were the better team on the night, controlling possession for stretches and hitting the woodwork on multiple occasions. North Carolina goalkeeper Scott Goodwin and the Tar Heel defense held up well against the Maryland onslaught before Tshuma finally broke through.

The Tar Heels nearly snatched a late victory in regulation when Robbie Lovejoy drew a penalty with less than two minutes remaining, but Maryland goalkeeper Keith Cardona made a clutch save on Lovejoy’s penalty kick to send the match into overtime.

In other Top 25 action on Friday night, Cal Poly pulled off a dramatic late comeback to beat No. 13 UCSB, 2-1, scoring an equalizer in the 88th minute before netting an overtime winner.

That wasn’t the only major upset of the night. Michigan handed No. 10 Indiana a 2-1 loss in Bloomington, with James Murphy providing the winner for the Wolverines.
