College Soccer Weekend Preview

Seeing a battle of the top two teams in any capacity across the world is usually a real treat, and that is exactly what college soccer fans will get this weekend.

Maryland, the No. 1 team in the latest SBI Top 25, welcomes No. 2 North Carolina in an ACC clash tonight (6pm, ESPNU) that is also the premier college soccer match of the weekend. The undefeated Terps will have a big homefield advantage in front of an expected sold-out crowd, but the defending national champion Tar Heels will be aiming to hand the hosts their first loss of the season while inching them closer to the top spot.

No. 3-ranked Akron also has an important conference clash this weekend. The Zips host a dangerous West Virginia side in a battle of MAC’s top two teams, and a win there for Caleb Porter’s side would all but assure that them the conference title.

The biggest match-up featuring teams that aren’t traditional powers this weekend will see No. 22 Cornell put the nation’s only perfect record on the line against No. 25 Brown, the toughest opponent the Big Red will have faced all season.

Here is a rundown of this weekend’s top soccer action:

  1. What a fantastic win for Maryland over a great team like UNC! Despite the weather both teams were able to showcase the best of college soccer! Cardona came up huge with the penalty save leaving Maryland unquestionably the best team in the country. Go TERPS!
