College Weekend Rewind: Maryland clinches ACC, Notre Dame ties Marquette, and more

The University of Maryland clinched the ACC regular season title on Saturday courtesy of their 2-2 draw vs. Clemson.

The SBI No. 1 Terrapins remain the only unbeaten team in the nation, but they had more trouble with Clemson than most would have imagined. Maryland jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but the Tigers battled back to force overtime and earn a draw, making them just the second team this year to avoid defeat against Maryland.

Just three days after beating Marquette, Notre Dame rode a late goal from Ryan Finley to earn a 1-1 draw against the Golden Eagles. Axel Sjoberg opened the scoring for Marquette in the 19th minute,  but Finley punished Marquette for the second straight match. After scoring twice in Wednesday’s victory, Finley delivered the equalizer in the 88th minute.

SBI No. 3 UConn shook off a mid-week loss to Providence by earning some revenge with a 2-0 victory against the Friars on Saturday. That win helped the Huskies earn a share of the regular season title in the Big East Blue Division, and a No. 1 seed in the Big East Tournament.

One team enduring a brutal year-end free fall is UCSB. The Gauchos suffered their third straight loss, and fifth in six matches, falling to UC-Davis in overtime. As if the losing skid weren’t bad enough, a UCSB player was detained by police after allegedly striking the match referee.
