Rapids continue Chivas USA’s misery with road win

By BRYAN ROBISON

It was a continuation of the overall story of 2012 for one team, while the other wrote a new chapter, as the Colorado Rapids defeated Chivas USA 2-0 at the Home Depot Center on Saturday night.

For Chivas, that continuation was their disappointing effort at home this season, as they have not won a match at home since July 18th against Portland. The Goats will need to score at least two goals next week against FC Dallas to prevent from becoming the lowest-scoring team in MLS history.

Meanwhile, Colorado was able to put a halt to a streak of their own, as the Rapids won their first away match since May 6th. Goalkeeper Steward Ceus earned his first-ever MLS start and shutout, as he got the nod over an injured Matt Pickens, who will also miss next week’s match.

For Ceus, he did not have to put up much of a fight due to Chivas not putting up much of a fight in return. Colorado was able to grab a lead early, and held on to it without much of a threat from the Goats. Martin Rivero put the Rapids up in the first third of the match, heading in a Jaime Castrillón pass to take the lead, while Kamani Hill knocked in a second goal, which was more than enough to hold off the home squad.

Chivas USA ends the season with just nine goals on the year at home, while giving up thirty in return. The nine goals is by far the fewest of any team in the league. Juan Agudelo, who scored just two goals in his time for Chivas USA this year, shared the team lead with Juan Pablo Angel for most goals at home this year- two.

They will look to end their season on a high note, as they will travel to Dallas to take on FC Dallas next Sunday night. Meanwhile, Colorado will close the year at home, as they will host the Houston Dynamo next Saturday night.

Here are the match highlights:

What did you think of the match? See the Rapids turning things around in 2013? Do you see anybody but Dan Kennedy returning to Chivas USA in 2013?
