The New England Revolution didn’t have much to play for on Saturday night, but being eliminated from the playoffs long ago didn’t stop the Revs from delivering a victory for a good-sized crowd in their home finale.

Diego Fagundez belted a 25-yard blast past Chicago Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson in the 17th minute to help give the Revs a 1-0 victory.

The loss was a devastating one for the Fire. Not only because it eliminated them from the race for first place in the East, but because it has dropped them behind D.C. United into third place and leaves them in jeopardy of falling out of the top three automatic playoff spots.

There weren’t many scoring chances for either team, with each goalkeeper managing just one save as the teams combined for just two shots on goal, but the Revs looked like a team playing to impress head coach Jay Heaps heading into the offseason.

Fagundez did just that with his blast, while Kevin Alston and A.J. Soares were among the standouts on the day for the Revs.

The loss leaves the Fire in must-win mode as they take on D.C. United in their regular season finale. A victory could push them back into second place in the East, while a loss could drop them into a wild card spot and a much tougher path in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Here are the match highlights:

What did you think of the match? Who impressed you for the Revs? Surprised to see the Fire struggle? Still think Chicago can be a title contender?
