A day after Maryland defeated North Carolina in a battle of the nation’s top two teams, SBI No. 3 ranked Akron showed us why just might have a claim to the top spot.

The Zips defeated West Virginia, 2-1, on Saturday to push their unbeaten streak to eight matches. Reinaldo Brenes and Scott Caldwell delivered goals in each half, and while West Virginia did become the first team in eight matches to score a goal on Akron, Majed Osman’s 52nd minute finish was as close as the Mountaineers came to an upset.

The victory leaves Akron in the driver’s seat for their eighth consecutive MAC regular season title and extends their unbeaten streak to nine matches.

The last remaining perfect record in college soccer was eliminated on Saturday as Brown handed Cornell their first loss of the season. Sophomore forward Ben Maurey needed just five minutes to give Brown the lead and goalkeeper Sam Kernan-Schloss made the goal stand up with four saves in a 2-0 victory.

The upset of the day took place at Furman, where the No. 18 Paladins dropped a 1-0 home decision to UNC-Greensboro. Sophomore Austin Miller delivered the winner for the Spartans.
