SBI MLS Best XI: Week 33

While he may not get as much attention for it as players like Chris Wondolowski and Thierry Henry do,  Robbie Keane has put together an MVP-caliber season as the focal point of the Los Angeles Galaxy attack.

He strengthen his case for an MLS Best XI nod against the San Jose Earthquakes, scoring a goal in the Galaxy’s 1-1 draw, and matching league scoring leader Chris Wondolowski on the day. Keane’s performance earned him a place on SBI’s MLS Best XI for the week.

Also making the squad was a quartet of Seattle Sounders who were key to the team securing four points from two matches. Goalkeeper Michael Gspurning was outstanding in shutting out Real Salt Lake while Fredy Montero was pivotal in Seattle’s destruction of the FC Dallas defense.

The Best XI has some youth on the squad as well this week, with 21-year-old Martin Rivero and D.C. United rookie Nick DeLeon making the cut after helping their respective teams to victory.

Here is a rundown of the SBI MLS Best XI for the next to last week of the regular season:

  1. How can the term “MVP-caliber” even be used for a player on a team with results standing at 9th out of 19th? The four other players who have scored as many or more goals as Keane, ALL play for teams with better records. Maybe the story should read “MVP-of-the-Galaxy-caliber”.

    • So you can only be an MVP candidate if your team is one of the top 3-4 teams in the league? Not really. Not saying Keane is MVP, that is Wondolowski, but when you consider both production AND production in important matches, Keane’s as good a candidate as anybody not named Wondolowski. Feel free to tell me who side from Wondolowski is CLEARLY a stronger candidate and I’ll gladly tell you why it isn’t the case.

    • i don’t know about snubbed, because i didn’t see most of the other games, but man, he’s really improved. i forgot how strong he is on the ball.

i usually think of him more as a destroyer, but when dc plays two holding mids, he does very well as a calm presence in the center.

  2. I remember seeing Kevin Alston in the All-Star game a few years back. I literally know nothing about him other than he put in a decent showing that game and had a lot of speed. What caliber of player is he? Is there even the slimmest chance he’s got USMNT potential?

    • I think what has been holding Alston back is his hammy (I even think he had a couple call ups marred by hamstring injuries). First time I saw him play was as a rookie against Seattle and he totally shut down Zakuani. The guy can jockey/tackle with the best of them.

    • I just read in an article that he is back at the Reebok and of course he won’t be playing with the first time for a while but hey at least he is back. I tried to post the link but it didn’t work. So i hope that helps
