The San Jose Earthquakes continued to control the Western Conference through the month of September, posting an unbeaten 3-0-2 record to stay ahead of the pack, not only in the West, but in the overall league as well.

There were plenty of players who played key roles in the latest outstanding month for San Jose, but none was as important as MLS scoring leader Chris Wondolowski, who notched four goals and two assists in his team's five matches. He scored or set up the game-tying or game-winning goal in three different matches, which made him the clear-cut choice for SBI MLS Player of the Month.

Wondolowski beat out a strong field of candidates that included LA Galaxy midfielder Juninho, teammate Alan Gordon and Sporting Kansas City's Graham Zusi for September honors.

The selection marks the third time Wondolowski has taken the honor. He was also named SBI MLS Player of the Month in April and June.

What did you think of Wondolowski's performance in September? Which player impressed you the most last month?

  1. I think he just keeps playing smarter. If he continues to see things coming, moving to good spots and finishing off chances, what’s not to like? Like people used to say about McBride, he is an honest player who works hard.
As for transfer possibilities, he probably could make more money in europe, but I would like to see him go to a league that is a cut above MLS.

  2. Wondo has taken his game to another level this year. He is scoring more goals but also getting a ton more assists setting up his teammates.

  3. Personally, I think the fact that the team has similarly elevated Alan Gordon to 13 goals — I mean, Alan Gordon (we used to say the same about Wondo) — suggests the supporting cast matters more. The more telling change from 2011 (where Wondo scored plenty) to 2012 is Chavez.

I’d go for Higuain because he’s single-handedly made the Crew competitive. But I expect a safe choice for a full year player and it’s probably Wondo then.

  4. Yup.. as witnessed during last game against sounders.. the guy plays on a level unmatched in MLS. Wish we had a player with that determination. His off the ball movement is a masterclass for others to emulate.

  5. Even though SJE also has Gordon and other strong players, is Wonderful Wondolowksi MLS MVP of the YEAR?

For Red Bulls, the two most valuable players have been Henry and McCarty.

  6. League MVP- just gotta be. difference this year is Wondo has a dangerous supporting cast yet he’s still finding his goals- and has added a career best in assists to go with it. Looking forward to some November Football!
