SBI MLS Player of the Week: Bill Hamid

D.C. United held on for a crucial 1-1 draw against the Chicago Fire on Saturday, and no player was as key to D.C. securing the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs than goalkeeper Bill Hamid.

The young netminder made eight saves, several of which were of the highlight reel variety, to keep the Fire from scoring a winner and relegating D.C. United to a wild card playoff match. His performance made him the clear-cut choice for SBI MLS Player of the Week.

Hamid beat out a list of candidates that included Federico Higuain, Kei Kamara, David Ferreira and Laurent Courtois.

What did you think of Hamid’s performance? Which MLS player impressed you the most last week?

  1. Hamid is fantastically talented and usually makes the right play. Unfortunately, he still makes some amazingly bad mistakes about once every 3 games. He’s got at least 2 red cards and some serious walk-about plays this year. I’m a DCU fan, but I’m not ready to hand over the spot to him just yet. Sean Johnson is impressive too (and, perhaps, more consistent).

    • +1. Fellow DC fan. Hamid’s physical ceiling is higher than anyone’s, but he needs a few more years to strengthen mentally and learn the game.

    • He made a potentially “amazingly bad mistake” during the game Saturday, but was reprieved. He went to cover a ball at the line, and it slipped out of bounds before a shoving match flared up on the sidelines. Which led to a foul being called and a free kick for DC. Otherwise there would have been yet another corner kick for him to deal with in the closing 5 minutes, and DC got enough luck on the goal line from the posts as it was.

  2. Is the rest of the country ready to acknowledge what DC fans have known for some time: that Bill Hamid is, was, and will be the future of the US in goal

    • You’re forgetting Sean Johnson. Hamid was stellar Saturday, I will give him that, but Johnson is up there too. And had Chicago not been atrocious at finishing, they would have had 3-4 goals despite Hamid’s huge saves.

Time will tell which one, if either, step’s up to take the role of the leading young GK. I haven’t seen consistent enough play yet from either to put them there. I would say Johnson still has a slight edge over Hamid. To tab Hamid already as Tim Howard’s successor is just not true.

      • Count me with Tyler on this one. Johnson’s a great shot-stopper, but Hamid’s a wonderfully complete player for such a young GK.

But I disagree that Hamid’s “the future” for the Nats — Guzan is only 28 and has been TERRIFIC for Villa. If it were a truly open competition, he might be pushing Howard within the next two years.
