Soccer Sunday: Your Running Commentary

One of the most anticipated matchups of the year takes place at Stamford Bridge today, as Chelsea will take on Manchester United. Chelsea is off to a torrid start this season, following their Champions League championship earlier this year. Yet despite having yet to lose so far this season, they sit just one point clear of second-place Manchester City, and four points clear of Manchester United.

Meanwhile, another rivalry matchup will go down at Goodison Park, as the Merseyside Derby will pit Liverpool and Everton together for the 219th time in the historic rivalry. David Moyes and company find themselves fourth in the standings after four wins in their first eight matches. They will look to continue that against Liverpool, which has yet to find its footing.

Elsewhere, several clubs scattered across the top of the Serie A standings will be in action, as Juventus will welcome Catania, along with Bologna taking on Inter Milan. In addition, American Michael Bradley and AS Roma will travel to Udine to take on the struggling Udinese squad.

Stateside, most teams will be concluding their MLS season. However, two playoff-bound teams will face off at the Home Depot Center, as the LA Galaxy will welcome the Seattle Sounders. Both know their fate, with the Galaxy taking on the Vancouver Whitecaps in the opening round of the playoffs, but that will not diminish the intensity on the field between two teams who will be looking to enter the playoffs on the right foot.

  1. Bradley once again starting the game on the bench. Hope he can fight his way back, but Roma seem to be doing fine without him lately.

  2. For all the United favorism people the last time that that ref refereed a united game he sent Evans off. That being said chicharito was offside and Torres went down to easily but then again so did Ashley young imo..

    • The fact remains that United get the benefit of the doubt over their opponents more than any other team. I think if you polled supporters of every team asking which team gets the most calls, there’d only be one set of supporters that wouldn’t say ‘Manchester United’.

  3. Two great games today ultimately ruined by the refs.

There’s no such thing as “the perfect sport”. Soccer is not perfect either. The frequency with which refs determine outcomes of soccer games is soccer’s biggest weakness, and that’s been on full display today.

    • cannot disagree. great game affected big time by officiating decisions that were either simply wrong (the Hernandez goal) or horribly misguided (the Torres second yellow).

    • So true. Ashley Young’s fall was a clear dive. Suarez would have never gotten a penalty for the same play but a yellow card. And Torres was tripped. How can the ref give Torres a yellow card for diving 15 yards outside of the penalty box?

But it all makes sense. There are news stories speculating the Sir Alex is going to retire at the end of this season and does anyone really think that Man U will not end up in first place for his last season? Sort of a going away present.

  4. So United needed an offsides goal and a shady second yellow to Torres to win a game. Good going ref you handed United another win.

      • You have to wonder if Luis Suarez would have gotten that call. With Young’s reputation for diving, that question has to be asked. But if that was the only controversial call, it would have been annoying, but acceptable. Three is absolutely unacceptable. But be sure about it, next time even a minor call goes against SAF, he’ll be claiming refs are aligned against United!

      • The replay makes the Ivanovic red look even worse. He goes down based on the feather-touch in the back, much like the Shaun Derry red United won against QPR last year. I thought his foot caught Young’s leg, but that was actually after he started going down and his leg kicked out behind him.

  5. Luiz own goal and Ivanovich being sent off decimated my chances to get ahead on fantasy football.

Manchester United up by two initially, but Chelsea have clawed their way back to level 2-2.

  6. Jozy wins the ball and provides the immediate chip through ball for the assist in the 87th minute! that effort really saves his performance for the day which was heretofore looking quite rust laden. good job, Jozy!

  7. ooooohhhh nooooo! Golden opportunity missed by Jozy. great run, gorgeous cross right across the goal mouth and Jozy angles it wide from point blank.

  8. Goal AZ. mixed bag so far for Jozy. some nice touches, a couple poor ones and a couple attempts at creativity that missed. perhaps hes a bit rusty from his layoff.

    • yes, that is classic Clint Dempsey. Nice. And it was great to see team leaders Bale and Lennon share in Dempsey’s joy with the goal celebration. Looked sincere.

  9. So many false positives and false negatives. Offsides is such a terribly called rule. I worry about Suarez bias on a call like that as well.

    Reply
    • Agree. Is Suarez a buffoon? Surely. Was that offsides call wrong. Absolutely. No matter what the ref missed during today’s tilt (and he let both sides play IMO), think that Liverpool was robbed at the end (whether Everton fans and folks who loathe Liverpool are happy with it or not).

  10. You know, I hate to say this, cuz I have a soft spot for Everton and especially Timmy, but it really sucks when legit goals are called back. That would have been a thrilling ending. And Suarez of all players lol

  11. Oh no, what an awful ending to a great game. Official has a shocker disallowing a Suarez 94th minute winner for offsides. He was not only in onside with 3 defenders(howard included) in front of him, but he was behind the ball as well. Awful, awful call.

What a controversy. Replays show that it wasn’t even a close call, clearly onside.

    • Suarez is a despicable human being. His antics tarnish the game. I couldn’t be happier with the offside call.

As well, Coates should have been called for climbing up Jagielka’s back.

  12. Good grief. 2-2. Brilliant display of marking by Liverpool on Naismith’s goal. Everton definitely with the more dominant play. Pool needs to tighten up and play more tidy possession.

  13. Pow! Suarez header from Gerrard. Sorry Timmy, your D decided to take a snooze on that one.

And now Osman with a good strike. 2-1 Red Dragons.

    • Gyau looks so confident out there on the right. making dashing runs, keeping position and tracking back defensively. The second half has been completely St. Pauli’s

      Reply
      • Agreed. Gyau playing with confidence and showing a high level of technical skill and is not afraid to take the defense on one on one–and, man, is he fast. And, surprisingly, he subbed in at the start of the second half as, are you ready for this, as right winger. His previous appearances for St. Pauli were as left winger. If Gyau can keep playing this well for the last 15 minutes of the game I think the kidmight be starting next week. I hope so.

      • Ditto.

It’s undeniable, the difference he’s made in the second half. He’s calm on the ball and making the right decisions, when to pass out, when to run with the ball. Being a St. Pauli fan, i know their isn’t a winger on the roster as dynamic as Gyau.

      • Yep, I think Joe Gyau’s excellent performance today (St. Pauli came back from being down 0-2 to win 3-2) will earn him a starting spot for St. Pauli’s next game. The TV announcer kept saying how dynamic Gyau is and that he was a game changer and that he took advantage of his chance to show the coach what he can do. After the game the St. Pauli captain Fabian Boll — a cult figure — hugged Gyau very warmly, and also the other veteran members of the team were hugging him, indicating that he has earned a lot of goodwill within the team.

Gyau appears to have actually grown a couple inches the past 18 months (is that possible) and is looking very strong physically, with more upper body strength then before. His presence on the field is very mature. This is great news for the USMNT. He said in a recent German news article that his goal is to win a spot on the USMNT for WC 2014.

      • That’s superb, thanks for the insight.

Had you found an english stream for the game? I was watching a sky bundesliga stream and could only grasp so much.
