UEFA Champions League Rewind: Barca wins late, Man United battles back, and more

For more than 90 minutes, Scottish champions Celtic looked like they just might pull off a shock result in Spain, taking a point off seemingly unstoppable FC Barcelona. Unfortunately for the Hoops, they just became the latest to come close, but fall short of knocking off the Spanish juggernaut.

Jordi Alba scored the winning goal in the final seconds of stoppage time to help lift Barcelona to a 2-1 victory at the Camp Nou, a result that helped push Barca to the top of its group. It also completed  comeback after Celtic pulled a shocking 1-0 lead courtesy of a Javier Mascherano own goal.

While Celtic fell short, there were other shock results in UEFA Champions League action on Tuesday. Shakhtar Donetsk dominated Chelsea on their way to a 2-1 victory in the Ukraine, while Danish champions FC Nordsjaelland took a well-earned point in a 1-1 draw against a lackluster Juventus side.

Manchester United managed to avoid joining the lost of shocked favorites by battling back from 2-0 down to post a thrilling 3-2 victory. Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez led the way for the Red Devils, scoring two goals to help United avoid an embarrassing defeat.

BATE Borisov saw its dream start to the Champions League halted harshly as Spanish side Valencia registered a 3-0 humbling, while Bayern Munich rebounded from their loss to BATE by posting a 1-0 victory against Lille.

CFR Cluj managed to overcome a red card to hold on for a 1-1 road draw against Galatasaray, while Spartak Moscow registered their first points of the group stage courtesy of a 2-1 victory against Benfica.

Here are highlights from Tuesday’s matches:

  1. I’m grateful for the highlights, but I’m not a fan of the fake announcing over the recap. It doesn’t sound authentic and is distracting.
