Union upset Fire at Toyota Park

The Chicago Fire went into Wednesday night's match against the Philadelphia Union expected to rebound from last week's loss to Sporting Kansas City.

The Philadelphia Union had other plans.

Jack McInerney recorded a goal and assist as the Union pounced on a flat Fire squad on their way to a 3-1 victory at Toyota Park. The result snapped Chicago's six-match winning streak at home and left them five points behind Sporting Kansas City for first place in the East with three matches remaining.

McInerney opened the scoring when he slipped in behind the Fire defense and latched onto a clever pass from Danny Cruz before beating Sean Johnson in the seventh minute to make the score 1-0. McInerney helped make it 2-0 in the 67th minute when he set up Gabriel Gomez for a long-distance blast.

Chicago responded just two minutes later when Dominic Oduro made it 2-1, but the Fire were unable to get any closer before Antoine Hoppenot came off the bench to provide an insurance goal for the visiting Union.

Here are the match highlights:

What did you think of the match? Impressed with the Union's performance? Beginning to wonder if the Fire are starting to slump at the wrong time? See Chicago beating the New York Red Bulls?

  1. Hoppenot is interesting. He has 3 goals (5th for the Union) in about 1/2 the minutes as those in front of him. Only MacInerney has more goals per minute. Hoppenot is always looking to get the ball and go to goal, maybe that’s a reason he has seen so little time relative to others (half the minutes of Adu who himself has played just over half the team’s minutes). But he has been mostly put in late in games to represent a counter-attack threat due to his speed and aggressiveness. He is a smart kid and he should be able to learn how to grow the rest of his game to help the team in other ways.

  2. Call it Tough love Kyle. I do support my team but I support them honestly. There’s a lot of potential on this Union side but there’s also a lot of false bravado, diving and plain old dumb judgements. This team could benefit from a little more humility, a tall centerback, a goalie that deals with crosses and the 18 yard box a little better, and strikers that finish their chances consistently. Until then, work harder, don’t ask me to tell you how great and badass you are just because you have the consistency of a broken watch (you work right two times a day).

As for supporting a team no matter what, there’s a difference between support and blind following. I bet you think the Eagles are superbowl bound every pre-season as well? DERP.

  3. Game was tough to watch on both sides. It was a pretty sloppy affair, and Chicago’s defensive lapses were evident from their high pressure early. Bad time for a two-game skid, they’ll need to bounce back quick and get a result against NYRB on Saturday.

  4. It’s people like you that give Philly fans such a bad reputation. I’m not any more satisfied with this season than you are – and considering I had partial season tickets it sucked at times – but you should always support your team especially after a win. No matter what. DOOP

  5. Great win for Philly though Chicago was pretty poor. The game lacked offensive quality in midfield and no one was able to control the game, even for more than a few minutes. Marfan has lost his early/mid-season sharpness and I’d bet that he’s tired. Philly still needs a central forward who can be a focal point if Hackworth wants to continue with his 4-3-3ish tactics. The Lahoud+Carroll partnership works, but they need someone else in there to provide some vision going forward (Keon Daniel is not that man).

Chicago needs Pavel Pardo to return.

  6. LMFAO! So true. Is that pic from last night though? It might ust be a stock image. If that is from last night then yeah, how about attitude like that at the beginning of the season.

  7. Jack Mac put your goddamn hand down. Your team has nothing to “front” about. You have so much work to do it’s depressing.

  8. The TV announcers said at the end of the game, that Chicago hadn’t lost at home since 2010. Is that true, or did I hear something different from what they said? That seems like a long time to go undefeated at home and my not having read about it at least once before.

Oh, and I’m happy for the pups. Good game! When everybody on the team is old enough to drink, wins might come more often. Fingers crossed!
