American Abroad: Weekend Rewind

By FRANCO PANIZO

There were a handful of Americans who made an impact this weekend by scoring goals or delivering assist, but that was not the only bit of good news.

Oguchi Onyewu made his first La Liga appearance for Malaga on Saturday, starting and going the distance in the center of their defense. Unfortunately for Onyewu and Malaga, they suffered a 2-1 loss to Real Sociedad. Still, Onyewu starting could be a sign of him returning to form and being on the brink of breaking into the starting lineup on a more permanent basis.

Josht Gatt saw only 45 minutes of action on Sunday, but he and Molde FK were crowned Eliteserien champions for the second consecutive season. Gatt and Molde defeated Honefoss BK, 1-0, and second-place Stromsgodset suffered a surprise loss to Sandnes Ulf, which clinched the league title for Molde with one round of games still to play.

Tim Howard and Everton also enjoyed a good result, as they defeated Sunderland, 2-1, on Saturday to continue their strong start to the Premiership campaign. Howard made two saves in the victory that kept the Toffees in a top four spot in the league standings.

  2. Klinsmann playing the big man in Germany with a press conference and the German press announcing some of the call-ups before officially announced in the US press:

Aus der Bundesliga sind Jermaine Jones (FC Schalke), die beiden Hoffenheimer Fabian Johnson und Daniel Williams sowie Timothy Chandler (1. FC NĂĽrnberg) dabei, dazu kommt vom Zweitligisten FC St. Pauli Joseph-Claude Gyau.

  3. News report in the German press that Joe Gyau has been called up by the US U-23 team to play in Russia Wednesday. Can that be? Is the U-23 team also playing in Russia Wednesday? Or maybe the newspaper got the it wrong and Gyau got called for the USMNT.

  4. I wonder if Cherundolo picked up some kind of an injury in the last game. He was subbed in the 87th minute, which is quite unusual for a full-back to be substituted so late in a game when the team is leading. Does anyone know?

  5. Kljestan might also be credited for the first goal. His header was saved before Bruno pounced on the rebound.

On another note, beautiful work by Jozy on his goal. The kid’s got insane talent. I don’t care how lazy Juergen thinks he is. Just BENCH the kid. Don’t completely leave him off the roster. Having this sort of thing come off the bench is dangerous.

  6. Hey no mention of my son, Alex? He got a call up to Slavia Prague’s U8s and chipped in a pair of goals against FC Admira. Keep him on your radars!

    • Finally GOodson won with Brondby. They have sucked all season. Glad to see Gatt with a 2nd straight title. Another summer of CL qualifiers. Congrats to Sasha on his goal. He provided the midweek assist for the CL win . Michael Bradley is doing real good at Roma. Loads of competition he has there but DDR got redcarded so he should start again this weekend. Edu should have moved to France or Turkey instead of Stoke. maybe a loan is possible? Gooch was the flop in his La Liga debut. He might get a few more starts but might bw a while. Bocanegra seems steady in 2nd division France

    • Michael Bradley was directly responsible for Daniel De Rossi getting sent off for punching the Lazio player in the attacking penalty area.

      just kidding, couldn’t resist.

    • I was half paying attention to the Roma game yesterday and I thought Bradley looked comfortable and played well. He almost had an assist at the death. He played a ball from just inside right midfield to about the 6 on the left side of the box. Roma almost hit it in. Would have been a clone of the assist he had earlier this year. (Was a great ball, but he was only able to hit it cuz his Dad’s the coach.)

    • pretty soon it will be back to Defoe-Ade in a 442, with Deuce in the midfield or off the bench. Lucky for Clint AVB is stubborn and giving him plenty of chances.

      • While he wasn’t at his best today, he hardly played poorly. There was one MC counter off a poor Dempsey pass today, but it didn’t come to anything. The whole team looked disjointed. I don’t think that Adebayor even registered a shot today; Dempsey certainly didn’t.

I don’t know if its a chemistry issue or what. Go back and watch several of the recent games. Defoe and Bale insist on shooting – the latter from even absurd angles – rather than passing to Dempsey floating in an open channel in the box. It’s a long season, and he’s shown himself to be a guy who will work himself into the starting squad. We’ll see.

    • I’d like to see him on the wing but he’s not getting time on the wing ahead of Bale or Lennon. Ade will start next game with Defoe. I’d be shocked if he doesn’t…

    • City totally controlled play. Nobody on the offensive side of the ball for the Spurs saw the ball much. I don’t think AVB knows what to do with Dempsey and Dempsey is not sure what is role is, is how it looks to me.

    • I don’t disagree with you at all. The more games I watch the more I wonder what value he is adding. He isn’t providing much, he also isn’t take much away, he’s just filling the space at this point. If AVB wants to make an impact that’s the position he can switch out quite easily as Bale isn’t going anywhere. Same w/ Lennon and Sandro. So there’s one midfield spot and one forward slot open for debate.

      • Ussoccer.com now says that the team will be named Monday.
Why do they need to build the suspense?
I know they probably want to make sure all the players are healthy and cleared to travel but come on.

      • I think it’s insane to announce the roster so late. Hopefully, the players have already been told. Otherwise, when will they have time to make arrangements and fly to Krasnodar? There are no direct flights there from England or Germany or Holland. And the game is only about 48 hours away. I can see the players arriving in Krasnodar on the morning of the match and rushing to the stadium to just make the pre-game warmups. Russia, whose players don’t have to travel from abroad, already announced their roster almost a week ago.

      • I agree, David M, totally ridiculous to announce a roster only 48 hours before a game. If there is a press tele-conference with Klinsmann after the announcement can please one of our intrepid reporters asked Klinsmann exactly what is gained by waiting so long. And if Klinsmann gives one of his wishy washy answer he is so good at, please follow-up and ask him to be more specific.

And, David M, I read in one article that USMNT is meeting in Frankfurt and flying together from there to Russia. And in Frankfurt it is already late Monday afternoon and still no roster announcement. Yeah, insane.

      • I’m sure the players who have been called up have already been notified and have made arrangements to be in Russia. I don’t think there’s that much disorganization in USSF.

      • yeah, Sean, i know players are notified in advance and was not implying USSF disorganization. Just don’t see the sense in waiting so long to announce rosters.

      • Most of the players already know…that’s why they sometimes get in trouble for tweeting out things ahead of the announcement (Eddie Johnson). They just don’t tell us in case there is a last minute change from the weekend due to results, injuries, etc.

      • That doesn’t make much sense. Rosters are always announced, and then, almost always, there are last minute changes due to injuries, etc. What’s the point of announcing it so late, other than build up suspense, which sounds like playing some silly games. All the countries have already announced their rosters for Wednesday’s games. Russia’s squad is already on the ground in Krasnodar, and our players all probably all over Europe now.

  7. Gooch was directly responsible for the second Real Sociedad goal. He got beat on the dribble, took a wild lunge at the ball in the 6 and pushed it directly into the path of the attacker, who scored. He looked solid on defense the rest of the game, but his slow reaction time with his feet is fatal at this level. So no, I doubt he’ll get any more starts in games that matter.

    • “at this level”? I was not impressed with the level of play the Malaga game. Gooch struggling at the level of play is a very bad sign for his chances with the Nats.
