Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

Manchester City jumped back into the Premiership’s top spot by dismantling Aston Villa, and the thorough pummeling could have been a lot worse had it not been for Brad Guzan.

Guzan had a five-save performance in the Villans’ 5-0 defeat to Manchester City on Saturday, and he was one of the few players on Aston Villa who looked like they belonged on the field. The U.S. Men’s National Team goalkeeper almost held City off the board in the first half, but the defending Premiership champions scored just before halftime before netting a barrage of goals in the second half.

Terrence Boyd scored the lone Americans Abroad goal this weekend, netting his 10th goal of the season across all competitions in Rapid Vienna’s 3-0 win vs. SV Mattersburg. Boyd capped the scoring in the match in the 37th minute, finishing a good passing sequence by Vienna with a simple strike from close range.

Eugene Starikov did not score, but he did play in his first competitive game at the club level in over a year. Starikov started and played 79 minutes in FK Rostov’s scoreless draw with Anzhi Makhachkala on Sunday, ending a playing time drought that dated back to Nov. 5, 2011.

What do you think of these performances? How bad would Aston Villa lost if not for Guzan? Expecting Boyd to go on a scoring tear in his next few games? Surprised this was Starikov’s first appearance in over a year?

I think Rogers should try to move to fullback. It couldn’t hurt. He’s got the athleticism to stay in front of people. Wouldn’t get beaten for speed. Could overlap & whack some blind crosses into the box.

      • patrick

thats been tried, though not for an extended time. The problem is he can’t cross, can’t beat people and doesn’t play great defense. He’s the poster boy for someone who should be an MLS lifer

    • HoboMike

Rogers was never a very good soccer player. He was a pretty good track star.

In Europe, you can’t simply lower your head and sprint towards the corner flag with the ball every time you get it.

      • bruce

As a Crew season ticket holder for years, I have to completely agree with you. Rogers had great speed, but when he kicked it, you never knew where it was going to go. The fact that he ever got Caps for the National team never made any sense to me.

    • Jamie Z.

I like how he knocked the advertising board in. You know, “Because I just scored, that’s why.”

  • SD

thought robbie finlay was out on loan…he’s not at nottingham forest….am i incorrect? didn’t jozy assist on AZ’ goal?

  • TomG

Easy tap in by Boyd for sure but it shows how well he moves for such a big man. He has the size, strength and tenacity to play hold up and target but enough speed to get behind defenders if they are not careful. He just needs to refine his touch and ball skills. In this way, he reminds me of a young Brian McBride. People often forget how fast McBride was when he was young.

    • Nato

He has mastered the league. 15-20 league goals might be enough forba move to the Eredividie or to a small club in Bundesliga

I greatly appreciate these weekly updates, I really do. But maybe wait til sunday night or monday afternoons to post them if half of the yanks abroad contingent doesn’t kick off til sunday night or monday afternoon? Anywho, carry on.

    • patrick

The title of the blog post is Weekend Rewind, so covering Monday games wouldn’t exactly be accurate. Besides, they’re covered the following week.

    • Josh D

I love sitting down Sunday evening and reading through these posts. My only thought would be to simply update this post on Monday evening with those players who played on Monday.

Really like the Midweek Rewind too.

  • Michael R.

Jozy let the defender poke the ball away, straight in to the path of his onrushing teammate who scored the equalizer.

    Well done, Jozy.

  • beeohbee

Saw somewhere that JAB played for Germany’s U-20 team last week. Not a good sign and is contradictory to what had been reported. Can’t find the link right now…

    • Tim M.

      Hope that’s not true.

And in other news another non appearance for Joe Gyau, and another loss for St. Pauli

      Breaks my heart

  • vipero

Good 90′ for Bradley tonite vs Torino.
Sad to be said: the absence of Danielino was, or at least seemed to be, a benefit for the midfield.
