Jones delivers game-winning assist in Schalke victory over Werder Bremen

Jermaine Jones may be known more for his hard tackling and defensive abilities than vision, but it was the latter trait which helped Schalke secure three points on Saturday.

Jones delivered the game-winning assist in Schalke’s 2-1 triumph over Werder Bremen, making a run before cutting back and dishing out a square ball that teammate Julian Draxler finished. The assist was Jones’ second of the season and kept Schalke in second place in the Bundesliga.

The U.S. Men’s National Team midfielder started and played 90 minutes before being substituted in stoppage time. He did not earn a yellow card, and hasn’t been booked in Bundesliga play since Sept. 28.

Here’s the assist:

What do you think of Jones’ assist? More impressed by the fact that he did not receive a yellow card? Surprised he has not been booked since late September?

  1. I’ve always like JJ. And don’t you think that he reported back to the other German-Americans on how well he was accepted and treated by the USMNT? And how that impacted the other Greman-Americans to be will to play for the US?

  2. I think he’s a great player to have in the 23. Depending on the opponent I could see him and Kljestan lining up in the central roles, with MB and DW as you other option.

Agree with above -> nice to actually have real options!

  3. Not surprised at all. JJ is a solid all-around player, with a huge engine and heart to match. One of the most underrated and underappreciated USMNT players. Hate to here the ill-informed criticisms thrown at him. Very proud to have him rep the Nat’s!!

    • I love JJ. The team needs his combativeness. He and Clint are guys that aren’t afraid to stir things up, something that every team needs. He hasn’t gotten a red in about two years, so there is good evidence he knows how to toe the line between aggression and foolishness.

I would like to see MB and JJ lined up alongside each other in the middle of midfield with Danny Williams playing in behind them, on top of the defense. If Sacha keeps up his current form, JK is going to have to really consider getting him on the field as well.

Great to have the dilemma of which deserving player to leave on the bench rather than worrying about having to fill a void.

      • This! JJ and MB can both be 8’s with Danny being the 6. It gives us two very good box to box midfielders as well as a 6 in Danny who can pass and distribute very effectively.

    • Amen, Lucas. Slap in the face to Jones, a man who has always given 100% for the USMNT and, I think, was the leader in total minutes played this year, at least before he had to sit out the Guatemala game in October because of the BS yellow card he got in Antigua.

In the video above, his assist is not graceful, but it is darn effective and if Jones can do that for Schalke then he is capable of doing it for the USMNT. And the recipient of Jones’ assist, Julian Draxler, keeps getting better every game.

      • And by slap in the face I mean Lucas’s comment about the lack of appreciation Jones receives and the “the ill-informed criticisms thrown at him.”
