Maryland, UNC, Virginia and Clemson reach ACC semis

Junior Patrick Mullins headed home a 52nd-minute corner kick to help give top-seeded Maryland a 2-1 victory over Virginia Tech in ACC quarterfinal action on Tuesday.

The SBI No. 2 Terrapins secured a place in the semifinals, where the will take on No. 4 seed Clemson, which eliminated No. 5 seed Boston College, in penalty kicks after the teams played to a scoreless draw in regulation.

SBI No. 3 North Carolina rode a beautiful strike from freshman Danny Garcia to edge a tough Duke side, 1-0. The Tar Heels posted their eighth shutout in nine matches to set up a semifinal match-up against the No. 6 seed, Virginia. The Cavaliers toppled No. 3 seed Wake Forest in penalty kicks after the teams played to a 2-2 draw. Sophomore Eric Board scored a 55th-minute equalizer for Virginia to eventually send the match to penalty kicks, where the Cavaliers converted all five penalties.

The ACC semifinals will be played in Germantown, Maryland, with North Carolina facing Virginia at 5:30pm, and Maryland playing Clemson at 8pm. Both matches will be shown on ESPN3.com.
