Report: Germany planning USA friendly in May

When Jurgen Klinsmann was hired as U.S. Men’s National Team head coach, it seemed only a matter of time before he would schedule a friendly against the other national team he used to coach, Germany.

That friendly is in the works, and if the German Federation can get full approval from the German Bundesliga, Germany will play the U.S. in late May. (UPDATE-At present, none of the reports out of Germany about the friendly have identified a location for the friendly, so at this point it is unclear where the match would be played.)

The friendly would take place before the United States plays a trio of World Cup qualifiers, and could mark the first game against Germany for German-born national team players like Jermaine Jones, Fabian Johnson, Danny Williams and Timmy Chandler.

What do you think of the prospects of a USA-Germany friendly? Like the idea of facing an opponent that tough before the trio of June World Cup qualifiers?

    • Well, the USWNT played China in Kennesaw not too long ago.

Mexico vs. Bosnia was the last men’s international I can recall.

Need the Falcons to get that new stadium and some grass, then maybe we can see the Nats here.

  1. Kicker is reporting that Germany’s first game will be May 29 in NYC, Boston or Miami against an opponent to be named later, while Germany will play the USMNT June 2 in Washington.

    Great, great news, this is.

  2. Look, I’m fine with US Soccer getting their occasional cash grab if they need it to keep the budget straight. But, please, no 5 games in 18 days like last year. Dead legs killed us vs. A&B and Guate.

June is where we need to pull at least 7 points, if not all 9.

If I’m going to attend games next summer, saving my $$$ for meaningful hex games. Not this.

  3. Awesome! USA always needs to compete against the best, and Germany are always one of the top teams in the world. Bring it to Livestrong Sporting park in Kansas City!!!

  4. Wonder if die Mannschaft will taunt the German born Americans with taunts of ‘Schwanz Schluckerin’ und ‘Scheissekopf’ und ‘Schwarzi’

  5. looks like 2 games v. Germany, one in may and one in june. i think these games are essential. Look at the games Klinsmann is getting us. we are playing awesome, only getting better, and a lot of it is credit to our friendlies. italy brazil mexico russia . . . next year Germany 2x. this is what we need. Coach Klinsmann knows what it takes for us to be champions.

  6. Can we call ourselves the Germany ‘B’ team? Seriously vs Russia we had Chandler, Johnson, Williams, and Jones starting with Boyd on the bench.

  7. hmm I wonder which side Timmy Chandler would play for.. probably won’t accept the call up.. we’ll call it a “conflict of interests”

    • Agree totally. MNT can’t play friendlies against most Latin American teams in L.A. just because of the heavy Latino population that would root for the opponents. Germany might be different. Unfortunately, Home Depot Center is beginning to look older than its age, and I’m someone who frequents the place often.
