Soccer Sunday: Your Running Commentary

With Juventus earning a single point on Saturday afternoon, Inter Milan now has the opportunity to pull within two points of the top spot in the Serie A standings. Cagliari stands in their way on Sunday, a group that has won three of their last five matches. After failing to come out on top in their first five matches at home, Inter Milan will be looking for their sixth consecutive home win at San Siro.

Meanwhile, fourth-place Fiorentina welcomes sixth-place Atalanta in a match to help determine the club that can maintain the pace the top three clubs are currently setting.

After seeing Barcelona tally another three points with a win on Saturday, Atletico Madrid will be looking to do the same at Granada. With an undefeated record at home, Athletico Madrid has only dropped points in two matches, both on the road.

  1. Hangeland sent off for diving in 2 footed on a bang bang challenge which saw him find the ball first with both feet before any contact with the opposition. wonder if the Adebayor send off yesterday affected on this one; certainly not the same play as yesterday’s studs up mistake nailed a player while today’s studs up challenge did not, but in the moment maybe the ref was influenced with awareness of yesterday’s 18′ rightful send off? They looked similar IF he couldn’t see the ball on the play

    • Hangeland’s tackle wasnt a red IMO, but to be fair to the ref, from his angle (directly behind Cattermole) it looks like Hangeland went right thru Cattermole and got very little ball. Other angles show this isn’t the case, but the ref could only see his angle. Unfortunate that he has to miss THREE games now. That’s a big blow.

      • While Hangeland’s contact with Cattermole was indeed minimal and didn’t seem bad on the replay, that’s largely irrelevant. In fact, there may be no contact at all, and a player may still be sent off. According to FIFA’s laws of the game, a player should be sent off for any tackle that “endangers the safety of an opponent”. There is no mention of any contact. And Hangeland’s tackle was definitely endangering the opponent’s safety. Cattermole got lucky; but he easily could’ve ended up in a hospital and months out of the game.

  2. and Arena took the national team to its best World Cup performance since 1930. If you talk about American candidates for US national team coach, I place Olsen behind Kreis as well as Kinnear, Arena, Bradley, Sigi, and somewhere around Klopas.

  3. Give Heft a break–all due respect to Ben Olsen, this is his 1st time in the playoffs as a coach. The other guys have won championships. Sigi and Arena have won with 2 different teams. Now, Sigi has built Seattle from scratch into a perennial playoff team and nearly won a 4th consecutive US Open Cup. Olsen has a long way to go to match any of them.

    • I can’t tell if you intentionally left Olsen out of that as a sarcastic thing or not. Not that he should be considered one of the “best American coaches” yet, but it’s kinda lame you mentioned 3 out of 4 coaches of playoff teams!
