Upsets galore in NCAA Tournament first round

There were upsets galore in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday night, perhaps none bigger than Fairleigh Dickinson’s shocking 1-0 victory against St. John’s in East Region action in New York.

Senior Antony Moore delivered a 36th minute strike to give the Knights the lead and their defense did the rest, holding off a Red Storm attack that never could find a way to get a shot past FDU goalkeeper Jacob Lissek.

In Virginia, goalkeeper Phil Saunders made a pair of penalty saves to help Maryland-Baltimore County upset Old Dominion in penalty kicks after ending the match in a scoreless draw.

Northeastern knocked off neighboring rival and ACC foe Boston College, 1-0, courtesy of a goal by junior Dante Marini. The victory sets up a showdown with New England powerhouse UConn.

One of the more dramatic results of the night saw Winthrop score a late equalizer from Achille Obougou before riding a trio of penalty kick saves from freshman goalkeeper Enrique Miranda to a penalty shootout victory against SMU.

Coastal Carolina made it look easy winning the best match-up of the first round, riding a pair of goals from top pro prospect Pedro Ribeiro to post a 3-0 victory against Elon.

  1. As an ODU student I’m glad I didn’t brave the cold weather last night to watch a 0-0 draw. Bummed we lost on penalties.

  2. Northeastern over BC is no upset. NU was in or just outside the Top 25 (Coaches pole) towards the end of the year and has an RPI of 21. BC – not a sniff of the Top 25 and an RPI of 38. Just sayin’…

  4. Well would you look at that. A Big East and ACC team that got in on nothing other than being in the Big East and ACC both lost, with the the other Big East and ACC entrants needing penalty kicks to beat Florida Gulf Coast and getting outplayed by Lafayette but scoring on a lucky goal.
