Wooten scores in Sandhausen’s big defeat

At least Andrew Wooten had something small to be happy about.

Wooten opened his account for the second division German club he is on loan with on Friday, netting Sandhausen’s lone goal in a 6-1 defeat to Hertha Berlin. The former U.S. Under-23 Men’s National Team forward’s 75th-minute goal trimmed Hertha Berlin’s lead to 3-1 and gave Sandhausen a slight glimmer of hope, but they conceded three more times in the final nine minutes of a match they cannot forget about quick enough.

For Hertha Berlin, U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team defender John Anthony Brooks started and went the distance. Teammate Alfredo Morales did not dress.

Here is Wooten’s goal (at the 1:34 mark):

What do you think of Wooten’s goal? Surprised that it is his only one for the club so far? See him gaining confidence and scoring more in the coming weeks?

  1. There was speculation earlier in the season that Morales was not seeing eye-to-eye with the new coach, Jos Luhukay, who I don’t know much about but is apparently a decent guy. But, imo, Hertha Berlin is one of the most unlikable teams in Germany with some players who area real pains in the b*+#. It does appear Morales is in a mess right now that he should try to escape from, although his lack of team time might be related something else and will iron itself out at some point. I will say in retrospect, it does seem that Klinsmann jumped the gun by a wide margin calling up Morales last year to the USMNT.

    • I think calling up Morales had more to do with letting him know he is seriously on the USMNT’s radar since there was interest from Peru.

It’s definitely premature to talk about him in terms of the senior team now, but let’s not forget that he was a monster against Mexico’s U23s back in February. It’s a shame he didn’t play in Olympic Qualifying as defensive mid was a huge weakness for the US in that tournament.

On a side note, biff, do you have German heritage or do you live in Germany? You always seem very well informed about German teams.

  2. When is the last time Alfredo Morales actually played? If he doesn’t play soon, perhaps a move in January would be in his best interest.
