Malaga were set to head back home trailing in their Round of 16 Copa del Rey series, but Oguchi Onyewu came to the rescue to ensure that did not happen.

Onyewu scored a stoppage-time equalizer to give Malaga a 1-1 tie against third tier SD Eibar in the first leg of their Copa del Rey series on Tuesday. Onyewu netted his second goal of the competition in the 93rd minute, and Malaga now looks a safe bet to advance to the quarterfinals as they host the decisive leg on Jan. 8.

Jozy Altidore also found the back of the net on Tuesday for AZ Alkmaar, scoring the club’s second goal in a 4-2 victory over FC Dordrecht in the Round of 16 of KNVB Becker. Altidore netted his 15th goal across all competitions and third in four days with an impressive dribbling run, and AZ is now through to the quarterfinals.

Jermaine Jones and Schalke 04 were not as fortunate, as they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Mainz in the DFB Pokal Round of 16. Jones went the distance and earned a yellow card as Schalke were eliminated from the tournament at home.

What do you think of Onyewu and Altidore’s goals? Surprised by Jones and Schalke’s elimination?

  1. Wow, that goalie on Onyewu’s goal was insane. Tried to get to a free kick at the edge of a very crowded box, Onyewu had an empty net to head into. Poor goalie.

  2. Wow. sounds like Malaga put out a weaker side against this third level group but any goal from a defender is a bonus…congrats to Gooch.

  3. I also meant to say “Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooch!”

I don’t get why he is not in the conversation for USMNT. He is better than most of the up and coming players that everyone is bandying about. Don’t get it.
