Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

By FRANCO PANIZO

Tim Howard and Everton finally put an end to their four-game winless skid, and they did so in dramatic fashion.

Everton pulled off a late comeback against Tottenham on Sunday, grabbing a 2-1 victory after scoring twice in final moments. Steve Pienaar punished his former club and sparked the the Toffees’ rally with an equalizer in the 90th minute and Nikica Jelavic found the winner in stoppage time. Everton initially trailed in the match after Clint Dempsey, who is finding his feet with Spurs, beat Howard with a looping shot from distance for his third goal in league play this season.

Terrence Boyd was another player who found the back of the net on Sunday, scoring the winner in Rapid Vienna’s 2-1 triumph over FC Wacker Innsbruck. Boyd continued his recent good run of form by impressively connecting on a sliding volley, which gave him nine goals in league play and 13 across all competitions.

It was not all good news this weekend. Jermaine Jones set up a goal for Schalke for his third assist of the Bundesliga campaign (fourth in all competitions), but he was also sent off with a straight red in the 73rd minute of the club’s 3-1 loss to VfB Stuttgart. Jones made a tackle from behind that was deemed dangerous, and it resulted in the first straight red ejection of his career.

What do you think of these performances? Impressed with Howard and Everton’s win? Who’s in better form right now, Dempsey or Boyd? Surprised Jones’ straight red ejection this week was the first of his career?

  1. Hey, remember when every one liked the Joe Gyau move and I said he should stick it out at Hoffenheim and every one mocked me? He still wouldn’t be playing, but least he wouldn’t be playing in the Bundesliga.

    • Hey remember when the Bobby Buchea (sp??) showed up at halftime and the Mud Dawgs came back and won the Bourbon Bowl? Despite awful performances by Dan Fouts and Brent Musburger by the way.

    • JA Brooks, Andrew Wooten, and now even Bobby Wood are now getting starts in the 2B unlike Joe Gyau, yet Gyau is the one who has been called up to our national team.
When will Klinsy take a look at any of the other three?

      • Wood has just come back from what his team said was a career ending injury. Please give him time.

Brooks looks to be Germany’s at the moment. Albeit, if we get a slight sniff of an opportunity, we should cap tie him now.

Wooten has been solid, but we have a core group and I think others have out performed him in his spot. He’ll get his chance in the summer.

Gyau is a very fast winger with an attacking threat. Which is exactly what we need. Klinsi has brought him once to see what he was made of and he didn’t make the bench. No harm, no foul.

    • Yea, he was unbelievable. Every time an attack was broken up in midfield, he was in the vicinity. Every break forward, he could be seen making a run. Unreal performance.

  2. So is Kljestan slowly working his way into more legitimate NATS contention? It’s hard to deny that he’s put together several progressively stronger seasons in Europe. Or, does the fact he’s starting and producing for a CL participant get trumped by the fact that “it’s only Beligium?” I actually think his patience is finally paying off.

Oh and, I’ve never forgotten that Gooch played his best football while in that league. He should have never gone to Milan. Might have been a smart money move, but it was a brick wall his career has yet to recover from.

      • +1. He likely would have gotten a few appearances here and there but the injury messed him up big time. And he was a Beast in Portugal but again injuries ruled him out for 2months and messed up his perfect season

    • PD,
Sacha’s return to the USMNT looks like it has more to do with him playing well in a slightly different role for Anderlecht and the unavailability and infectiveness of other US attacking midfield options, rather than any stunning epiphanies on JK’s part.

      • Can someone help me, I’m trying to understand why there’s such a movement for Klesjtan to get more playing time with the Nats. We are deep in central mid. How come there’s not the same movement for other players who aren’t getting playing time. Diskerkud plays on the top team in Norway, Bedoya plays on the top team in Sweden, Corona and Castillo play for the Mexican league winner and Boyd is tearing it up in Austria. All are getting little playing time however and don’t have fans astonished they’re aren’t getting enough.

      • I want the likes of Mix and Corona earning more time – and they are slowly. You have to remember they’re very young. Klesjtan has never performed for the US outside of playing against a third string Swedish side.

He just has never really brought it for the Nats in any capacity that screams “First off the bench.”

      • Well, Anderlecht (and Kljestan personally) has acquitted itself quite well in the UEFA CL group stage (much better than the Norwegian champion, for exmaple). In addition, Belgium is ranked a lot higher than Austria, Sweden, and Norway in UEFA Country Ranking.

      • Yes, but at least they made it to the group stage, which cannot be said for any Austrian, Norwegian, or Swedish teams. And Anderlecht earned 5 points in their group, more than Man City in theirs.
