Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

Tim Ream and Bolton Wanderers were in need of a confidence boost heading into 2013, and they might have just gotten it on Saturday.

Bolton ended the year on a winning note, defeating Birmingham City, 3-1. Ream started and went the distance in defense for a second consecutive game for the Trotters, who are now in 14th place in the Championship and only five points shy of seventh.

Other good news came out of Tottenham’s 2-1 win over Sunderland on Saturday, as Clint Dempsey made his return from injury. Dempsey came off the bench and played 14 minutes for a Spurs side that currently sits in fourth place in the Premiership table.

It was not all good news, however. Maurice Edu failed to dress for Stoke City again despite Geoff Cameron being suspended due to yellow card accumulation, and Brad Guzan and Aston Villa continued to leak goals in a 3-0 loss to Wigan Athletic.

Here’s how the Americans Abroad performed this weekend:

    • Don’t say that to the Spurs, who lost a lead in the last few minutes. Everton has shown surprising resiliency this season. Jelly will come through in the 2nd half of the season, too.

  1. Where did Dougie have Tim Ream slotted for Bolton? I’d read that he might be playing a defensive midfield role instead of centerback?

    • 14th is actually higher than they’ve been for most of the season, sadly. They were missing a bunch of players other than Holden, some long term and some shorter term. A few have started coming back and getting back into form (such as Chung-Yong Lee, who scored the winner yesterday) and others should be coming back soon.

      • Exactly. They had a really rough start to the season, but are starting to play a lot better. Great news that Ream now has to 90 min games in a row, just as they are turning around a bit (and maybe a month away from Holden returning).

NY Times Goal Blog had a good Q&A with Ream a month ago (http://goal.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/11/29/questions-answers-tim-ream/), and he mentions the new manager starting to approach him. It’s really nice being able to fast forward a month later and see that starting to turn into a success.

Also, I mentioned Holden maybe next month, that came from a quote from the manager a couple days ago where he mentioned Stuart Holden looked good in 60+ minutes in a closed-door scrimmage vs Wigan.

    • Guy killed his development by going to the SPL – a league with a pretty thuggish approach to defense. When he left MLS I would have taken bets on his future developments. I would have lost. A cautionary tale about looking for the right league to grow as a player.

      • I was never impressed with Edu’s technical ability in MLS. his athleticism helped him stand out more than anything. I agree the SPL was the wrong choice, but rather than costing him what he had technique-wise, it stunted him from learning technique and tactics.

I think he was part of the last generation of MLS athletes to move abroad. I hope we now see proper soccer players making the jump. I think before, it was hard to stand out if you didn’t have size or athleticism. Now the technical players are stepping up and getting counted.

Edu needs to head to the Netherlands or Serie B to learn. Portugal too would offer him a lot.
