European Weekend Rewind: Chelsea edges Everton, Man City survives, and more

By NICK IUELE

The English Premier League was the only top European league in action this weekend, so football supports everywhere got their fix by tuning in to watch EPL clubs do battle.

The result was a goal-filled weekend that saw scoring in bunches. Chelsea needed a late brace from Frank Lampard to top streaking Everton. It was the first time the Toffees have lost in their last eight league matches. Steven Pienaar put the home side up 1-0 after two minutes, but Lampard scored just before haltime and in the 72nd minute to help the Blues get a crucial three points away.

Manchester City survived a late double by Russell Martin and a Samir Nasri red card to beat Norwich City, 4-3. Edin Dzeko put City up 2-0 within the first four minutes of the match, and Sergio Aguero added a third goal in the 50th minute. Down 3-1, Norwich City came within one after Martin scored in the 63rd, but a Mark Bunn own goal sealed the win for the Citizens.

Arsenal put on a seven-goal performance, embarrassing Newcastle 7-3 at the Emirates.  Theo Walcott provided a hat trick, while Olivier Giroud nabbed a brace. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Lukas Podolski had the other two goals for the Gunners. Demba Ba, who has been linked to Arsenal for the January transfer window, had a double for Newcastle.
