Teams hoping to land a quality player in today’s MLS Re-Entry Draft, the first phase of a two draft re-entry process, will find the selection much smaller than what was initially released by Major League Soccer earlier this week.
Several top options have been removed from the initial list, and won’t be available in today’s draft, including the likes of Marvell Wynne, Tony Tchani, Justin Mapp and Rodney Wallace. Others removed from the list include Chris Birchall, Gonzalo Segares, Stephen King, Kyle Nakazawa, Brian Perk, Josh Gardner, Steve Purdy and O’Brian White.
Teams had until 5pm on Thursday to reach agreements with players in the Re-Entry list, making it likely that many of the players now missing from the list agreed to new deals or were made Bona Fide contract offers by their teams. Segares reached agreement on a new contract on Thursday while Gardner was traded to Sporting KC for a second-round pick on Thursday.
The first re-entry draft takes place today, and teams selecting players today must either pick up the player’s current contract options or offer them new contracts close to what their old contracts were. Once this first Re-Entry draft is complete, the remaining players will then be made available in next week’s second phase re-entry draft, where teams can then select players and make them contract offers well below their original salaries. That draft figures to be the much busier one of the two.
Among the more high-profile names remaining on the list are Ike Opara, Conor Casey, Juan Pablo Angel, Ramiro Corrales and Julian De Guzman. None are likely to be selected based on the large size of their recent salaries. FC Dallas goalkeeper Kevin Hartman is another high-profile name available, a player who just might be selected today by a team needing a goalkeeper.
Here is the full list of players available for today’s re-entry draft (the draft order is based on reverse order of the 2012 MLS standings):

What do you think of this list? Who are you surprised to see on the list? Who do you hope your team picks up?

why so many drafts?
My Fire are a joke. They take Dos Santos…Why? Get a better striker to partner with MacDonald. Get rid of Oduro and this guy and bring in a DP. Our owner said they’d spend Keane DP money if the player is right, we are in one of the largest markets in the US and can’t bring in shit. It’s a joke really.
Rolfe is fine as Macdonald’s partner.
A midfield general has been lacking ever since they decided to loan out Grazzini.
What happened with Renken? I don’t see him listed any more.
Tony Tchani resigns with Columbus:

What happens if they’re not selected? Are they then “free agents” and able to sign with whichever team makes an offer? Not sure if free agency is actually allowed in the MLS….
Ives, can we get the Morning Kickoff segment back? I hate having to go to other websites for my soccer news.
Angel back to the Red Bulls!!!
……says the DC United fan…
Ha. If only to retire in an RBNY shirt. We’re, um, ok up to I think.
I’d welcome it… as a coach!
Ives – why is Michael Nanchoff not on Vancouver’s list?
Does Conor Casey end up somewhere? Would be interesting!!!
As a Rapids fan I’m very relieved to see Wynne is not on this list anymore. Can the Rapids pick Conor back up at a cheaper rate or do they have to wait and see if he clears this draft then negotiate with him?
Colin Clark back to Colorado would be pretty good too since Jamie Smith is on the way out.
i doubt we will see Smith or Clark or Casey back in Colorado.

Cascio—–Akpan/Cummings—–Castrillon

none of the aforementioned trio really play these positions or would be back ups to these spots. If the Rapids make a move it will be for a defender like Keel, Chabala or Thomas assuming their contracts are cheap.
I think LA made a wise decision renegotiating with and keeping Perk and Nakazawa. They’re two players with a lot of upside. Perk made $110k in 2012, while Josh Saunders made $77k.
Perk has shown potential, but what has Nakazawa done? There are tons of more talented players that would be interested in playing for the champs.

Anyone think the Union will try to get Califf back?
Yes. I do.
Well, there goes my theory that the Union will try and get Califf back. The Union just signed Parke.
Maicon Dos Santos?
we’ll take him for 50k
Then you have to wait for Rd. 2
I think Bill Gaudette has proven he can be a serviceable keeper. I am curious to see if NYRB end up keeping him or if another team picks him up. He could be a very goodb value keeper considering performance vs. cost.
–He was only making 63K at NYRB as of the August player salary list from the Players Union. I don’t think he is the best keeper, don’t take me wrong, but for 63K a year, he is a great keeper.
Given NY is in good shape with Robles & Meara, I can’t see Gaudette in an RBNY shirt again.
