Galaxy sign Sorto as Homegrown Player

The LA Galaxy’s offseason is officially under way.

The Galaxy announced Tuesday that they signed defender Oscar Sorto as their latest Homegrown Player. The 18-year-old spent most of the 2012 season training with the frist team, and he is the first defender to be signed directly from the Galaxy Academy.

“It is a dream come true to join a club like the Galaxy, a team I have been a fan of since I was a kid,” Sorto said in a statement released by the Galaxy. “Growing up watching players like Mauricio Cienfuegos and Cobi Jones win championships motivated me to become a professional. I am very happy to now be able to represent my hometown like they did.”

Sorto is now the fourth Homegrown Player in club history, joining forward Jose Villarreal, Jack McBean and Tristan Bowen.

What do you think of the Galaxy signing Sorto? Expect him to see time in 2013?

  1. the challenge is getting these kids aged 16-20 games. They aren’t going to develop sitting on the bench for the Galaxy and playing 10 Reserve matches a year.

Should MLS clubs get more involved in the PDL? I noticed that the Sounders and Timbers have U-23 teams in the PDL. They still only play 16 games a year though.

I think all MLS clubs should put a an U-23 club into the PDL. Perhaps PDL teams only play 16 games a season now because of travel and logistics issues. With more clubs in regional divisions it would make it easier to play more games.

      • yeah but like i said, two MLS clubs already have teams in the PDL.

USL pro doesn’t seem to want to be a league that includes MLS b teams.

Yes the PDL is for college kids for the most part but there are some semi-pros and pros in the league. The infrastructure is there for MLS to enter and mold the PDL into a hybrid development league for both college kids and MLS youth and u-23 players.

  2. Dear Galaxy, (I quote)

“Please don’t hire anymore past-their-prime players like Keane and Beckham. Obviously the youth system will not do well if you keep this up.”

  3. It is not insignificant that Sorto talked about growing up watching the Galaxy, how he was motivated to become a pro by watching some of the early players. Nice to see that younger players feel the league has a tradition and a history.

When will we get MLS Films, players marching out on to the frozen tundra of _______ field?
