Lee set for Whitecaps return in 2013

Young-Pyo Lee will be returning to the Vancouver Whitecaps after all.

The Whitecaps confirmed on Thursday that Lee will be back with the club for the 2013 season. The 35-year-old defender was contemplating retirement but has chosen to play at least one more season in Vancouver, where he shone this year.

“We’re thrilled that Lee has decided to return for a second season in Vancouver,” Whitecaps FC head coach Martin Rennie said in a statement released by the club. “He was a cornerstone of our backline last year and a leader on the squad. Not only does he bring world-class talent, but also a wealth of experience that will continue to benefit his teammates.”

Lee signed with the Whitecaps last December. He started in the 33 league games he played in for the club, scoring one goal and assisting on four others.

What do you think of Lee returning to the Whitecaps? Think he will have another solid year in 2013?

    • Whitecaps most consistent player. Only knock on him is that he wasn’t as effective last 1/3 of the season as the travel took toll on his body. Class act and a true professional all around. Still has ridiculous dribbling skills.

      • I don’t remember what he looked like playing is why I asked, but 33 games is pretty good durability even if he faded, and he’s not too expensive. That being said, age over 30 for a wing player is a potential risk, no matter how classy and professional. The wheels start falling off, and opposing players aren’t going to wait up for the old man.

  1. obviously undervalued based on the lack of comments here. a great, seasoned, professional right back. league could use more guys like this.

  2. I knew nothing about Lee, but a quick wiki check and you’ll see what an impressive career he’s had both with the S. Korean national team and stint in the EPL.

Looks like Vancouver can rely on another seasoned professional for 1 more year…the anti-rafa if you will.
