Maicon Santos picked up by Fire in lone selection of Stage One of MLS Re-Entry Draft

Stage One of the MLS Re-Entry Draft came and went in the blink of an eye, and the lone player selected in it was Maicon Santos.

The former D.C. United forward was picked up by the Chicago Fire on Friday, and he will now join the Fire under the terms of the option that had recently been declined by United. Santos started 16 of the 26 regular season games he played in for United in 2012, scoring seven goals and assisting on three others in the process.

The Fire mark Santos’ fifth different MLS club since he joined the league in 2010. Aside from United, the 28-year-old Brazilian has also played for Chivas USA, Toronto FC and FC Dallas.

Players not chosen on Friday will be eligible for Stage Two of the draft, which will take place on Friday, Dec. 14.

What do you think of the Fire acquiring Maicon Santos? Expecting him to stick around there for more than one season? Disappointed by the lack of player movement in this round of the Re-Entry Draft?

    • yeah, he had a good 2011 -for which i was glad for him- but this year he was back to his wasteful ways -like prior 2011 with houston.

      • apparently oduro wants to start somewhere, so this – i’m guessing – is the beginning of the end for oduro in chitown

    • Oduro and Santos are different players in different roles. They might be two of the most inconsistent finishers in MLS, but they play radically different games.

  1. First half of the season:
Maicon Santos scores a bunch of goals
“OMG what a good/bad move on the part of Chicago/DC!”
    Second half of the season:
Maicon Santos sucks and gets benched
“Whatever happened to that guy Maicon Santos? I guess he’ll be with team #6 next year…”

  2. Maicon was a bargain at the price DCU paid to sign him, and he’s still a bargain. Wish him well, except when the FIre are playing DC.

    • Maicon Santos is definitely worth a gamble. He worked hard, did a lot of things right for DCU–he just didn’t do them consistently.

    • Most of the players aren’t that appealing UNDER THEIR CURRENT CONTRACT. Now we get to the second stage and I think you’ll see more action. Either players will sign for lower numbers with their original clubs. Or other clubs will approach someone and say “we’ll offer you original salary minus $30k”. For the most part, these players weren’t on this list b/c they’re no good (well, some are no good). It’s b/c they aren’t good value. They can still be worthwhile for the right team but at a smaller number.

      • That’s said perfectly. It’s about value and there were few, if any, that were worth it. That being said the next week could produce some crazy movement.

    • He’s a good 3rd Striker. Not starting material, but good depth. The Fire need to bring back their old playmaker. They are set at Striker.
