Marquez returns to Mexico by joining Leon

Just in case New York Red Bulls fans needed more confirmation of Rafa Marquez’s departure, in comes word that he has already found a new home in Mexico.

Hours after mutually agreeing to part ways with the Red Bulls, Marquez signed a deal with Leon, the Mexican club announced on Thursday. The move marks the controversial Marquez’s return to Mexico, where he has not played club soccer since 1999 while with Atlas.

Leon recently secured promotion to Liga MX, and have signed the 33-year-old Marquez and former Mexican national team forward Nery Castillo as reinforcements.

What do you think of Leon signing Marquez? Are you already picturing the club getting relegated after Marquez is ejected in the final game of the year? Too busy celebrating his Red Bulls departure to care?

  1. Goodbye Rafa, you will not be missed. You could not have been worse over the past three seasons. Lazy, slow, disinterested, cowardly, the list goes on. I do not see you having much success at Leon either, your career has been over for a few years now.

  2. Well, Henry? He’ll probably be upset. I mean, he and Marquez have things in common; For example, Marquez threw Tim Ream under the bus by criticizing his play while Henry threw Kenny Cooper under the bus by criticizing his play.

    • This is a perfect example and one that amplifies the microcosm that is the MLS fan base.

Rafa criticizes Ream and everyone gets upset.

Henry criticizes his teammates, namely Cooper, and nobody says a word.

It’s okay, most MLS fans didn’t like Rafa from the very beginning due to his history.

I thought he was decent when healthy although he was constantly exposed by pace.

      • mostly because it was clear to the entire league that Marquez NEVER cared a lick about NYRB or MLS. Marquez criticizing anyone’s play except his own is hilarious. The dude has been irrelevant for years, at millions per year no less

I remember when Red Bulls signed Henry, I was ready to bandwagon that team hard…then they signed Marquez and got the wrath of the soccer gods they deserved for such heresy–years of mediocrity

why should the uS embrace such a sad EFF? it was on him to reach out to the US fans, and what a surprise, the immature Marquez failed to even try.

Marquez is a worthy recipient of the disgust he receives. Henry is not close to the same universe of juvenile loserdom that Marquez dominates

        biggest loser EVER in MLS…Marquez.

        chump

that you look to use this to criticize the MLS fan only illuminates your lack of understanding in this situation.

  3. Please don’t tell me NYRB got NOTHING for him. He had a year left on his contract right? Was there a transfer fee? What’s the story?

      • Alright. Good points. I wasn’t really thinking it through I guess. This is probably the best move they’ll make this season. I’m torn if Juninho is the right guy based on his age but what do I know. I though not gett a transfer fee was a bad idea, lol.

  4. Guy was an absolute joke from day one and you almost couldn’t make up how much of a bum this clown has been NYRB. What a win-win for NYRB too, shedding his ridiculous salary and opening up a DP spot so a real player can actually be brought in for next season.

  5. FINALLY! I mean, I feel he started to pick it up and was giving it an honest shot in his last few games here but, no. The team is better off without him. He was a defensive liability, as good as his distribution may have been. Good riddance from a NYRB fan’s perspective but good luck to him from a rational human’s perspective.

      • Terrible red card?

He was ejected due to two yellows. The timing was terrible in the sense that the RedBulls were pushing forward and had a man advantage, especially after Cooper missed the PK but the challenge itself wasn’t bad when you consider the fact that Rafa was the one standing between Pontius and an open run at goal.

      • The first yellow should have been a straight red. NYRB’s coach was the only one not to see that Rafa was out of control and even with the favorable MLS refs it was only the matter of time before Rafa would be ejected.

      • Season ticket holder buddy. Was well aware of what I was saying. Didn’t think I had to go into details but I guess I do.

He picked it up. Was giving it an honest shot. Went back to his old ways. Fans are tired. Bye, Marquez.
