The Portland Timbers have been busy preparing for 2013 by making a number of moves in the early stages of the offseason, and on Tuesday they made another by re-signing forward Danny Mwanga.
The Timbers signed Mwanga to a new contract, assuring that the 21-year-old will stick with the club for the foreseeable future. Terms of the contract were not disclosed, but the deal will keep Mwanga in the same city where he spent part of his teenage life.
“It is very exciting to come back and continue to play in my hometown with the Timbers, and I am grateful to be able to play in front of such a great group of fans that have supported me through high school, college, and now, my professional career,” Mwanga said in a statement released by the Timbers. “After joining the Timbers midseason last year, I am very much looking forward to coming back and really stepping up with a full season ahead of me under Caleb Porter.”
Mwanga arrived to Portland via trade from the Philadelphia Union on June 6. He played in 18 matches for the Timbers and scored three goals, all of which came against the San Jose Earthquakes.
What do you think of the Timbers re-signing Mwanga? Do you see him shining under Porter?

He definitely has potential to show what he can do now that (finally exposed psycho) PETER NOWAK is no longer holding him back like he did in Philadelphia. You can tell Mwanga has that extra bit of natural talent and touch that most in the MLS don’t have. If gets regular time and has the opportunities to work on his finishing he will be a very good asset for Portland or any MLS team.
Lets hope he shows up for more than one game this season. I would rather a good consistent player than a great unpridicable one.
He hardly played this year… The above statement is better suited to francisco torres
i think he’ll be solid, especially if they can get some attacking out of the midfield as well to help set him up
top bust of 2000’s
I think it’s early to declare that. I’d like to see how he’d perform with consistent playing time, and he seems the type of player that could thrive working with Caleb Porter.
Watch timbers v. San Jose … Then consider his age
Top bust of the 2000’s? That’s harsh. We still have 988 years to go!
I think it’s great they re-signed Danny. Not everyone gets to play at the pro level in their hometown and if it gives him a boost in confidence then it’s all positive.
I’m also looking forward to seeing how Porter arranges his team. Hes made some significant moves already. He’s got a lot to prove and it will be interesting to see how things play out.
“What do you think of the Timbers re-signing Mwanga?”
I don’t think anything due to “Terms of the contract were not disclosed”.
I wonder if the Timbers have a chance of even sniffing tthe playoffs this year, and even if they do how far could they go before being knocked off by the Sounders?
The Sounders choke in the playoffs so I like Portland’s chances.
so very true, just like they were chomping at the bit to host houston in mls cup, only to choke against LA. i don’t want to hear about the ref either because its an old lame excuse.
Why bring him up then?
