Report: Crew Homegrown Player Trapp set to turn pro, mulling MLS offer

Akron standout and Columbus Crew Academy product Will Trapp is widely regarded as one of the best pro prospects in the college game, and it appears now that he is ready to turn pro after two seasons of college soccer.

According to the Columbus Dispatch, Trapp has hired an agent and is preparing to leave school and turn pro. The Crew have made Trapp an offer, which he is considering along with some European options.

Trapp is one of several Akron underclassmen who could potentially leave school early to sign MLS deals. Seattle Sounders academy product DeAndre Yedlin is another Zips underclassmen who could sign an MLS deal this winter, while Bryan Gallego was recently part of an MLS trade after having his homegrown player rights traded by the New York Red Bulls to the Portland Timbers.

Here is a profile on the midfield standout, a player who has been a part of the U.S. Under-20 national team set-up.

If Trapp does sign with the Crew, he will join last year’s Crew academy signings Ben Speas and Matt Lampson on the Columbus roster, along with Aaron Horton, the Crew’s first Homegrown Player signing.

  1. Crew have a ton of homegrowns ready to go pro this year… Matt Wiet out of UCLA too… are they going to sign all of them?

    • Reports are they’re going after Wiet, Chad Barson out of Akron and another homegrown keeper. Bliss said signing 2-3 would be a success but they want to sign all of them. I just wish there was a good rb/lb prospect to sign.

  2. Outside of Horton, the Crew homegrown signings are looking really, really good. Do they have one of the best development academies out there? Trying to get out of my Crew bias on this

    • The Crew have teams in Michigan (2), Cleveland, Cincinati and Columbus (2). The Cincy team gets Kids from Kentucky and and parts of Indiana.

      • Just think how one team in the Southeast could rack up all the talent from there with these kinds of development teams.

    • crew certainly have some college stars, nobody that has made an impact at the pro level yet. FCD, TFC and DCU has the most signings.

My all homegrown team as of 2012 is:

      ———————–Fagundez (NE)————McBean (LA)——————–
      -Villareal (LA)———————————————–Najar (DC)————–
      ———————-Oneill (COL)———Shanosky (DC)————————-
      -Morgan(TFC)—Henry (TFC)—————-White (DC)——–Lade (NY)—
      ————————————–Hamid (DC) ————————————–

the best are on the way hopefully.
