Soccer Saturday: Your Running Commentary

Stoke City and Everton are two of the more surprising teams in the English Premier League in recent weeks and both will put their recent impressive runs on the line when they face off at the Brittania Stadium.

Geoff Cameron and the Potters enter riding a six-match unbeaten streak (4-0-2), with four shutouts and just two goals allowed during that stretch. They face an Everton side that has lost just once in 13 matches, with Tim Howard and Co. on a four-match unbeaten streak in a stretch that has included meetings against Arsenal, Manchester City and last week’s win against Tottenham.

Brad Guzan and Aston Villa are trying hard to stay clear of the relegation zone, and they will need a point or three from their visit to Anfield to take on a Liverpool side that has put together consecutive victories to climb to 10th place in the Premier League after a poor start to the season. The match is airing on Fuel TV, which means a higher chance you can watch the match on your cable/satellite provider.

In Italy, Lazio takes on Inter Milan in the day’s best match-up. The Nerazzurri sit just four points out of first place in Serie A, but they face a Lazio side that has put together a five-match unbeaten streak to climb to fourth place in the Italian League standings.

  1. Tuned in to watch bundesliga in gol tv but appears to have been replaced by BEIN 1. GOL TV in HD is blacked out. Does GOL TV disappear now that BEIN is THE game in town? I’m on comcast in nj….

    • not sure who is your provider, but that has happened months ago. If you have Directv, you don’t get GOAL tv unless you have the spanish package and that is only in SD

  2. Where is AZ and his hatred spewing rants about Altidore. Jozy shut you up today. he has two goals so far in the game and looks a threat going forward everytime he has the ball. Oh and he is up to 11 goals in the eredivsie now.

    • Yeah, but what has he done in the second half?

Some people just aren’t happy unless they are providing criticism, not just a critique.

For instance, Lichaj starts for AV in a win, and the only comment is that Guzan saved an own goal –

      • I mean geesh, there was a minute where Jozy wasn’t runnin full speed so he’s never be a top class striker or USMNT quality. -)

    • Jozy’s been totally anonymous for weeks upon weeks and he finally has a good game and we’re all supposed to bow down to him?

A little consistency from the guy would be nice, especially considering the overall soft defensive league he plays in.

      Reply
      • He has almost half of his team’s goals and is only 4 behind the league leader. Does he need to have 2/3 of the team’s goals to impress you or would that somehow still not be enough because the league is soft?

      • He hasn’t done a thing for weeks. Take out a great run to start the season and its the same Jozy to me. He still has a lot to prove.

      • You judge a player over the course of the season not because they have the inevitable peaks and valleys.

Aguero had not scored in a while before today. Is he suddenly garbage?

Jozy looks like he will have two good goal scoring seasons in a row. That kind of consistency, regardless of the league (and the Eredivisie ranked #8 in Europe is hardly an easy league) deserves a great deal of respect.

  3. stoke tied it. everton finally woke up after they took the lead in the first half. stoke still outplaying everton in the second half with 33 mins left

  4. Altidore just scored for AZ 2:00 in the game. Pure hustle play allowed him to take advantage of a bad back pass and a lazy defender’s run to retrieve it.

  5. Best goalkeeper in the PL this season? Guzannnnnn. Reina has gone to crap. Friedel lost his spot to a helpless Lloris. DeGea is average at best. Cech is pretty damn good.

  6. Fellaini will probably be sanctioned this week for that headbutt to Stoke’s center half, Shawcross. Referee didn’t catch it, but the cameras did.

    • dangerous play too, can really hurt someone bad doing that, break an orbital bone, a cheek bone, concussions, etc.

should see the book thrown at him

  7. Terrific 2nd goal by AV. Great 1-2 combination in the box and beautiful back heel assist. Dang. Liverpool back line shredded on that one.

  8. Impressive sequence by Liverpool and kudos to Guzan for being well positioned to save Suarez’s one time chip shot/volley. Still waiting for the Red Dragons to breakthrough as we should take the 3 points at Anfield.

    • Oh cruel footy… AV takes the lead against the run of play on a *wicked* shot from distance. Well, now the Red Dragons have their work cut out.

    • Gooch never starts for league games :/. Unless there in a situation where they need to rest Demichelis or Welligton or one of them is injured, with their league position i don’t think they’ll make any alterations to their backline.

  9. Is there any Yank having a bettet season than Bradley? Sure Guzan has been great but AV suck. They olay like they wanna be relegated. Jozy was World class untik his red card in early October. Boyd is solid but Austria is kinda like 2 Bundesliga. Not only has Bradley become starter at top4 club ob a top5 league but he is getting loads of plaudits. He looks like he belongs. Heck he is partly responsible for 1 of tjhe best players in Serie A (DeRossi) for riding the bench. Show some resecr

    Reply
    • Bradley is not the reason De Rossi is not starting; injury is. De Rossi has been nursing one injury or the other. He will miss the Chievo match due to a right foot injury. Bradley is good, but don’t kid yourself he is sending an Italian national team starter to the bench.

      Reply
      • aren’t there still big time transfer rumors about DeRossi and MCity? Bradley’s play may not have put DeRossi on the bench directly, but his play has put him on the bench to keep him healthy so he’s sellable, right?

unless that transfer to MCity has blown up and is off now, MB’s play has provided Roma with the opportunity to turn a big profit selling DeRossi, so maybe MB’s play is not sending DeRossi to the bench, just to England

        we’ll see

    • Was he even all that successful in Germany? There was a brief period where i know he was knocking in goals for them, but didn’t frankfurt just end up terminating his contract after he was sitting on the bench for a while?

      Reply
      • Ingolstadt tore it up because he was one of the highest earners on the team and yet only started every other game. 9goals in 31 matches. Not bad since the team sucked. He showed clearly that he could handle the league.

  10. Joe Gyau entering game for St. Pauli in the 77th minute against Ingolstadt, still 0-0. Gyau’s first appearance in three games. Hope he can help St. Pauli get a win.

    • How’d he do Biff? 5:00 am a little to early for me on a Sat. morning, often times, so I have a hard time catching St. Pauli matches.
