Soccer Sunday: Your Running Commentary

After starting and playing the entire match against Pescara last weekend, Michael Bradley will look to continue his momentum as AS Roma travels to Artemio Franchi to take on Siena. Roma will also be looking to continue its momentum, having won three of their last four, as they look to move into the top five of the Serie A standings.

Inter Milan will also look to make progress in the standings, as they take on Palermo at San Siro, with both Napoli and Fiorentina looking to remain ahead while Juventus returned to the win column on Saturday.

Another pair of Americans will be looking to take the field this afternoon, as Fabian Johnson and Danny Williams will look to dress for Hoffenheim, which is looking to escape the relegation grouping. They currently sit 16th out of 18, and have struggled over the last month, having lost three out of their last four.

  1. Don’t forget that Corona, Castillo, Garza and Tijuana play Toluca in the 2nd leg of the Mexican Apertura final tonight. Tijuana has the 2-1 lead from the first leg.
It’s being broadcast on both Univision (with Spanish commentary) and Univision Deportes (with English commentary). TV coverage starts at 6 PM.

  2. Roma fought hard in this one. Good road win keeps them sniffing around the European spots. Three straight wins, against weak opposition, true but they got the 9 points they should.

      • I saw bits and pieces of the game. From what I saw it was maybe a little bit below average compared to his other performances for AS Roma. The pitch in Siena was soggy and in bad shape due to lots of rain. I would be interested to hear other impressions.

      • He was shifted back to the right-sided intermedio until the last fifteen minutes or so, when they put on an extra attacker and moved him back to regista. He had his worst game of the season. He was asked to push forward a lot but also to stay wide, and he looked a bit out of his element. He also made a few bad passes. It was a combination of mis-use of his skill set and just an off day. However, Bradley is so industrious and so smart that he still contributed. His runs were good, his defensive work was very good, and it was his pass that led (a bit inadvertently) to Roma’s go-ahead goal.

    • DW just had a bad touch that got him trapped in a corner, leading him to give the ball away. Two quick passes and Bremen have a goal.

Hoffenheim are a baaaad team. Could be 3-0 or 4-0.

    • He has played there a few times before but not with any regularity. If it turns into a regular gig it may help to solve our cb problem with usmnt. We could certainly use a speed but to pair with Cameron back there and we have lots of cm depth.

      • I couldn’t see very clearly on the stream I was watching, but the German announcer called out his name several times on Bremen’s 2nd goal.

      • His performances at CB got him benched last season w/ Hoffenheim.

Doubt he’s our solution there. Would rather see Mo there in an emergency, and yes that’s taking into account the fact that he’s riding the bench at Stoke.

      • Hogatroge,

Is is possible that Danny Williams might actually improve from his performance at CB last season?

Do you suppose he is capable of learning?

      • i think edu might actually be a better center back then danny williams. danny williams is a better defensive mid, but only because he is a better passer, not a better defender, then edu. and of course edu is also capable of learning. you should learn something new everyday.

      • Based on the scorelines Hoffenheim’s been dealing with whenever he plays DM or CB, I’d say it’s unlikely he blossoms into an international caliber CB.
