Sporting KC sign defender Songo’o

Sporting Kansas City continue to stock up ahead of what will be a busy 2013 for them.

Sporting KC announced the signing of defender Yann Songo’o, a 21-year-old Cameroon youth international. Songo’o is still awaiting the receipt of his P-1 Visa and ITC before being added to the team’s roster.

Songo’o represented Cameroon at the 2011 African Youth Championship in South Africe and he helped his country reached the final and qualify for the 2011 FIFA Under-20 World Cup. He is the son of former goalkeeper Jacques Songo’o, who played in four World Cups for Cameroon, and brother of Portland Timbers midfielder Franck Songo’o.

“We had him train with us last summer and we feel he is a talented, young player with a big upside,” Sporting KC head coach Peter Vermes said in a statement released by the club. “We look forward to adding him and bolstering the depth of the team.”

Songo’o joins a defensive unit that already includes 2012 MLS Defender of the Year Matt Besler, Aurelien Collin and Ike Opara.

What do you think of Sporting KC signing Songo’o? How impressed are you by all the moves the club has made this week?

    • I doubt it is so much unwillingness to use it as the hubris of thinking that opening the checkbook slightly further really makes MLS that much more competitive for serious young talent. Until we’re a mature spending league you’re talking about being lucky to get someone like Montero, even if you try and make it interesting with the cap rules. I see us giving players a second chance or a bigger stage than their home league, but we won’t be diverting Messi’s anytime soon.

Actually, Valencia isn’t, at least not yet. That was the intention when he was brought over, but the subsequent identification of a knee problem–and resulting surgey–led the deal to be converted to a loan for the past season. There’s been no public word yet on whether Portland and the Colombian club that still holds Valencia’s rights intend to consummate the deal this year.
